About Luke Ashton

Telling stories through data to make policy easy to understand for the common man.Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, I moved to Alma, Michigan in order to pursue my education in Political Science and to strengthen my passion in Bagpiping at Alma College. During my time at Alma, I focused on how to use data through politics, anthropology, and economics to make policy easier to understand and shine a light on truth. I took the opportunities at Alma to study abroad in Scotland and Bulgaria in order to use my skills in a foreign environment, as well as using my experiences abroad to develop my own independent research. Since graduating in May of 2017, I worked as a data intern with the Community Systems Foundation in New Delhi, India assisting with United Nations Projects related to AIDS, WASH, disaster mitigation, and child development through UNICEF India. I worked as a data analyst with Americans for Prosperity, an organization dedicated to breaking down barriers in the way of Americans achieving their true potential. I assisted our state chapters with survey writing and implementation, strategic analysis, and data visualization. When the COVID Pandemic hit I took a leap of faith and quit my job to pursue my Master's degree in Economics at George Mason University and was lucky-enough to be accepted as a MA Fellow and Jon B. Cotton Fellow with the Mercatus Center. I was able to take my experience in data analysis and combine it with qualitative economic theory and reasoning to give me a holistic tool set to approach any problem I want to solve. I was able to test myself with the QuantGov team at Mercatus where I assisted in research projects ranging from creating datasets for machine learning, web scraping policy and regulatory text, to using the data we captured to write policy briefs and my own research papers.Through Mercatus I was introduced to HData where I now work as the Regulatory Economist specializing in energy policy, data, and all things XBRL and its use to bridge the gap in data between the public sector and private sector. I get to scratch so many itches in working from data, to webscraping, economic and policy analysis, op-ed writing, developing blog content, and serving as the subject matter expert for the company and our clients.

Listed skills include Data Analysis, Microsoft Office, Political Science, Public Speaking, and 20 others.
