I worked as a research intern under the supervision of Dr Christopher Brown and Dr Isa Kolo from Glasgow University and Dr Sean Watson from TownRock Energy.The project I was working on was titled 'Understanding the Impact of Paleoclimate Corrections on the Cheshire Basin with Application to Deep Borehole Heat Exchangers'. It concerned researching the extent to which the Palaeoclimate affects heat flow measurements from ex-hydrocarbon boreholes in the Chesire Basin with this information then being used to evaluate the potential performance of Deep Borehole Heat Exchangers in these boreholes. My work on the project was primarily split into three different stages, firstly I conducted a literature review primarily on geothermal energy in the UK, Deep Borehole Heat Exchangers (DBHEs) and Palaeoclimate corrections. Then I worked on calculating the heat flow perturbation due to the Palaeoclimate in collaboration with Dr Watson. This involved researching the geological properties of the lithologies found in the Knutsford-1 borehole and using them to calculate the perturbation in Excel. After that work pivoted to using the heat flow data to model and simulate the DBHE using both MatLab and OpenGeoSys to analyse the viability of converting the Knutsford-1 borehole to a DBHE. This work will form a large part of the paper on the subject that is due to be published later in 2024. Additionally, I prepared presentation on the project that was given to fellow research interns, academics and industry professionals.
