Hello,My name is Luke Perry and I'm a first year Durham computer science student on the masters course.I'm looking to expand my disciplinary horizons from the more foundational skills of algorithms, data structures and computer programming by finding experience in industry. Particularly, the field of artificial intelligence is one that inspires and intrigues me (with my having done an extended project qualification on artificial intelligence and its theoretical limits in regards to general intelligence AI and its potential for sapience/ sentience).I wish to learn more about (and gain practical experience in) machine learning and deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision.My course at Durham has modules such as 'artificial intelligence', 'maths for computer science (with submodules for ai mathematics)' and optional programming projects. I'm looking for time in industry with experts to facilitate this learning process and meet brilliant people working at the cutting edge of technology.Problem solving and broadening my mind are things I love to do, I find this process often to be most rewarding and beneficial when done corporately. Hence I find myself not only to work well in teams, but prefer it since it allows me to learn and share knowledge and experience in a much more effective way with peers who I can share my enthusiasm with.In addition to my love to learn and solve problems, I also have a multitude of other interests. For instance, I love rugby and am currently a member of my St Cuthbert's Society college rugby team. I am also deeply in awe of virtual reality technologies and their current trajectories; I have a CV1 oculus rift I use to experience advancements in the virtual reality space. Another massive interest for me is philosophy, a deeply complex field which seeks to refine the logical process in order to determine the nature of knowledge, being, and correct living. I believe that my philosophical pursuits are what set me apart from my peers, allow me to refine the methodology of logic and analysing the intersection between technology and philosophy (hence my fascination with artificial intelligence).In terms of prior education, I received 4 A*s at A-level in subjects as follows: Computer Science, Mathematics, Philosophy ethics and religion, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).These have provided a solid foundation for my path into further education where I enjoy the academic change in pace.
