My architecture thesis project during my masters explored social uses disrupting a clear plan office. A garden, theatre, swimming pool, and others, gave the spaces for work identity and character. It was adding the social uses that made the building tick and gave longevity. Though I confess I take my own escape through swimming, so the pool was a particular focus. I joined Fitzroy Robinson in 1998 and have been here since, being part of two mergers with Aukett and then with Swanke. We are now leading the way with smart buildings and embedding technology and digitization into the design process so that our buildings of the future will work better in experience and performance. An architects fate is sealed when they see their first building demolished, I haven’t had this and strive never to. We sink the carbon once, then adapt going forward. I think biodiversity is a bigger part of the solution than is currently realised, and that good architecture uplifts your day and sets a tone. It is an inspiring profession, something I realise is deeply embedded when asked why I do it.
