The role of Explorer in Residence (EiR) was introduced in 2014, by Chief Executive Mike Robinson, in order to recognise some of the best young explorers and the role that exploration still plays in inspiring people about the world around them. We were founded by David Livingstone’s daughter, Agnes, Ernest Shackleton worked for the society and William Speirs Bruce, who was a council member, led the first Scottish Antarctic expedition in 1902. In addition we have hosted most of the leading lights in exploration of the last 130 years including Hillary, Amundsen, Scott, Stark, Mallory, Shipton, Kingsley, Bird, Nansen, Armstrong, Heyerdahl and many many others. However this is not an historical role, we continue to play host to most of the leading contemporary explorers and adventurers.

As a guide for the Polar Academy, I help support young adults as they grow in confidence through an intensive ten month training programme to enable them to begin to realise their potential by undertaking a gruelling two week ski expedition in eastern Greenland. The Polar Academy is a charity that identifies ‘invisible’ 14-17 years old secondary school children, crushed by a lack of self-esteem and gives them the chance to redefine their physical and mental limits.Participants are put through a rigorous ten-month training programme before being immersed in the wilds of Greenland, navigating through some of the world’s remotest terrain for ten days. Their confidence soars with every step. On their return to Scotland, each pupil shares their experiences with their peer groups, speaking to more than 20,000 school children in their region. Through our endurance challenges and expeditions, my wife, Hazel and I have to-date raised over £90k for Marie Curie (www.justgiving.com/hazelandluke).Marie Curie is a registered charitable organisation in the United Kingdom which provides care and support to people with terminal illnesses and their families. It was established in 1948, the same year as the National Health Service.In financial year 2014/15 the charity provided care to 40,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its nine hospices, along with support for their families.[2] More than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals help provide this care.At the nine Marie Curie Hospices, quality of life for patients is actively promoted as is providing much needed support for their carers. Marie Curie provides the largest number of hospice beds outside the National Health Service.

The Club was founded in 1970 and membership is open to those with an interest (or more!) in the Arctic.Many members having been on expeditions to the Arctic and travel extensively throughout the region. I led the external finance and investment support for Pale Blue Dot Energy (now Storegga) - a team of determined individuals committed to helping the world transition to a lower carbon future, today, by focusing on three core areas:1. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Commercialisation: including the Acorn CCS project - the first and only CCS project to receive EU PCI funding. 2. Oil & Gas Transition – Encouraging diversification and re-skilling to low carbonactivities – a “Just Transition”3. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.As part of a small specialist team based in Geneva, my role included:- Securing internal UN funding to develop a brand new 'Climate Finance Unit' team within UN Environment- Securing external funding from bilateral donors and other agencies and organisations to help with operating costs of this team; and - Developing financial models and partnerships with commercial banks to increase levels of investment in zero-deforestation sustainable agriculture programs in developing countries. - Producing the short video 'UN Environment Unlocking Sustainable Finance' which offers an insight into our work.- Working on private sector strategy within the UN-REDD team, by collaborating with strategic partners, including governments, development banks &NGOs- Developoing strategic partnerships with BNP Paribas and Rabobank to finance land use projects in developing countries that offer verifiable environmental and social benefits that deviate from the standard practices, as well offering attractive risk-return to investors.
