Understanding our product architecture as the world moves from desktop software to the cloud is a big part of what I pay attention to. I build tools, processes and relationships around managing technical debt and measuring the health of software systems in our infrastructure and products. It's a little teaching, a little cheerleading, a lot of measuring and showing the truth of what the current state of a system is versus where we would like it to be. It's mostly smiles and figuring out how to improve things in software over time.

At MathWorks I do things around process, standards, education, consulting and change management with a focus on software architecture. It mostly involves talking about the organization, shape and relations between components within our systems, occasionally delivering a mental hug or two and lots of writing things down. I try to call myself a teacher (it's my favorite part!)I also organize one hour artist-retreats, curate our forums for creativity and mindfulness, advocate simplicity, organize shindigs and listen to people who feel they need to talk to someone. I am not introverted.

I wrote code at MathWorks for 10+ years before I made the jump to teaching architecture. This team was a rag-tag bunch of misfits and hardcore-introverted software engineers...quite possibly the 'A-Team' and I had a ton of fun working with them on various things which I can't share here. My job involved a lot of architecture, coding and integration-oriented communication. It's about web-technologies, facilitating the Internet of Things, and how our stuff can be all shiny and sparkly in the cloud.

More code and some hardware hacking but this time in the domain of music, generative sound, installation art and composition/performance systems. I make tools for making music and share them with my friends and anyone who's interested. There is a lot of bleeping and blooping going on here...and solder burns occasionally.This is my creative-outlet. Ironically it often revolves around matrices as much as my day job.

Design, build, mentor, rinse, repeat. Principal developer on the team that built and shipped Deploy OnBoarding, which won Top Human Resources Product of the Year by Human Resource Executive magazine. Yay us! Beers are in the fridge!

Web app development involving software on demand over broadband. Met a lot of interesting people. Learned a lot of good lessons. We laughed, we cried, we eventually tanked when the bubble burst, but it was a good experience.
