Profile bio

About Luma Bashmi

I am a lecturer in psychology at the RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, Fulbright Scholar, award-winning academic researcher, and the co-founder and director of a mental health support non-profit foundation in Lebanon,“Elaa Beirut”. Elaa Beirut was founded in response to the 2020 Beirut port explosion, socioeconomic crisis, and pandemic-related mental health and psychosocial distress. With an international network of 30 mental healthcare providers, the non-profit foundation provided over 200 therapy and training sessions to 44 individuals and NGOs. My work has been featured on several media outlets, including Al Arabiya News. I am the former Chairperson of the Institutional Review Board and Head of Scientific Research & Development at King Hamad University Hospital (Bahrain). I was awarded the Cambridge Trust & King’s College fully-funded PhD scholarship and now in my third year of doctoral candidacy at the University of Cambridge (Department of Psychiatry and Cambridge Public Health). I focus on mental health and wellbeing among Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan by applying the IC-ADAPT framework and looking more widely at mental health in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region. While always interested in science, discovering evidence-based research about the power of the Mind-Body connection re-directed my career into the field of mental health among vulnerable populations, including Arabic-speaking refugees and cancer patients. My personal mission became exploring how psychological processes such as stress and trauma can influence quality of life (QOL), disease and aging.I have a BA (HONS) in Psychology and a minor in Communications from the American University of Beirut, an MA in Marketing & Communications from the University of the Arts London, and an MA in Psychological Research (Health Psychology) from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). My MA dissertation on 'Constructing an Arabic Language Version of the Stress Overload Scale (SOS)' was nominated for best dissertation on behalf of the CSULB Department of Psychology in 2017. I completed my research internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles) under Dr. Waguih IsHak in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences.

Listed skills include Public Relations, Marketing, Corporate Communications, Social Media, and 29 others.
