As a Junior Analyst with the Cabinet Affairs and Strategic Reporting Office, I was able to further my knowledge and experience in public policy and the development of a federal program. I contributed to the content development of a Treasury Board submission to further the Laboratories Canada strategy to foster innovation and collaboration through the development of world-class facilities. From the initial stages of writing the submission to the final substantive reviews and submission to the Treasury Board Secretariat, we were able to advance the $2.8 billion strategy without any delays. I also drafted a Memorandum to Cabinet and Treasury Board submission for an economic recovery proposal, following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with the Director General's Office to monitor and report on pandemic related activities including enhanced cleaning reports and the tracking of human resources (employees working on site, teleworking, or on leave). This also gave me the opportunity to participate in a departmental wide Emergency Operations committee (at times, on behalf of the Director General) and assist in the development of briefing materials for the Assistant Deputy Minister. Along with a very supportive team, this role was unique as it challenged me on my knowledge of parliament and legislation, as well as giving me experience in developing important policy documents.

As a Junior Analyst in the Directorate of Service Transformation, I have had the opportunity to contribute to a sector wide initiative to improve and standardize corporate services within the Science and Parliamentary Infrastructure Branch. Being a part of a new and important initiative was exciting as we were able to create our own direction and objectives, based on industry best practices. Closely collaborating with management and service providers, I learnt about their roles and responsibilities, and in tandem, developed promotional materials to communicate their services to the branch. I co-developed the first annual Client Satisfaction Needs Survey and analyzed the results to benchmark current perceptions, use and satisfaction of the existing internal services and the anticipated needs for the upcoming year. Client engagement was important in this role in order to receive helpful feedback during the development of new tools; I coordinated and co-hosted several client focus group meetings, expanding my network and building good relations. This role has also given me the opportunity to work closely with upper management, as well as to present my work before a committee of Directors General. What stood out about this role was the near-exclusive collaboration with management. This certainly taught me to better approach new situations with a strategic lens.

As a Policy Officer, I have had the opportunity of working closely with international counterparts to organize meetings both within Canada and overseas. I have also traveled with and supported senior management at conferences, on tours, and in meetings. It was always a pleasure to work with internal staff to gather information for briefing materials as well as to provide guidance and advice on travel standards and policies.What I liked most about this role was the opportunities it gave me to expand my network, meeting people of various backgrounds.

In my role as a Human Resources Coordinator, I aided in the staffing process of both executive and corporate level employees. This includes the management of applications, scheduling interviews, administering screening tests and participating in interviews. I was able to support the full recruitment process from beginning to end, using software tools including HRIS, NJOYN, Sharepoint and LinkedIn. My favourite part of this role was that it was fast paced and challenging. I felt motivated to be better each day with new work that was relevant and interesting.

As an Administrative Coordinator, I worked closely with Occupational Health and Safety. Here, I arranged CPR training for staff, participated in OHS committee meetings and recorded minutes, and drafted the organization's business continuity plan. I also had the chance to liaise with external suppliers to give and obtain information necessary to ensure the accuracy of accounts and to rectify any irregularities. I was also familiarized with softwares including SAP, IFMS, JIRA and GCDocs.My time at ISED taught me the various roles and functions of office work and introduced me to the organizational structure of the public sector.

Having been promoted to Assistant Manager within 15 months of being with Laura Canada, I am particularly proud. Upon assuming this role, our store saw significant increases in the key performance indicators; namely in Dollars Per Transactions and Units Per Transaction. As Assistant Manager, I trained and guided incoming employees, establishing smooth onboarding processes while also coaching associates to improve sales skills to meet weekly goals. I was in a position to extract and analyze data from performance reports in order to identify trends and set goals to improve as well as boost employee morale. My time as Assistant Manager taught me invaluable skills including customer service, sales, conflict resolution and the importance of being passionate about what you do. Management is certainly an area of interest for me as I love working with people to further develop.
