SCP is manufacturer of fruit juice concentrates and juice based beverages. It is a supplier to many of the best known brands of South AFrica. As Head of the Technical Department, I am responsible for leading the Quality and NPD departments. Apart from ensuring that the objectives of these 2 departments are achieved, I provide advice and support to the operational department to enable efficient and cost effective processes..NPD responsibilities involve providing tailor-made products and concepts for customers based locally as well as abroad while staying price competitive.Quality department aims to maintain our ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000 certifications while procedures and processes are continuously monitored and assessed for improvement.Provide direction and insight on senior management level with regards to plant operations, cost efficiencies and resource management.

At Appletiser I have been responsible for optimising raw materials in terms of quality, cost and application. Thus ensuring that specifications are compiled to meet the Brands needs, optimising the value chain from supplier to contract packer or manufacturing plant and that the inherent integrity of the Brand is never compromised. The latter involves the auditing and approval of all global suppliers for all raw materials, maintaining an approved suppliers' list for all contract packers and manufacturing plants while monitoring performance of both supplier service and raw material performance on a continuous basis.

AFP is a subsidiary of Appletiser, and is located at the same plant, on Applewaith farm, Grabouw. It processed at the time 70 000 tons of fruit annually (optimally) which includes apples and pears. It also was a part owner of a citrus plant at Citrusdal. As Technical Manager, I was responsible for getting the plants, first AFP and then Citrus Juices, HACCP certified early in 2000"s to enable trouble free exporting. After achieving these goals it was a matter of maintaining the quality and food safety management systems on an on-going basis.The Techncial Manager was also responsible for the continous improvment of fruit juice extraction and processing technology to enable optimum extraction yields.As Techncial Manager I was also heading the New Product Development (NPD) section. AFP produced preblended formulated juice concentrates to most major juice bottlers nationally. This required continuous product development for clients and prospective clients, presentation of new trends, product costings and factory trials when a new product has been accepted.
