I worked in Supportive and Non-Market Housing, where I was responsible for assisting the City and non-profit applicants in the successful approval and development of supportive housing projects. I drafted Council reports, and prepared assessments of project viability. These included analyses of rezoning proposals, consultation with the developer, assessment of community reception and responses to Council and public inquiries. During my tenure, I assisted in getting three major supportive housing developments, totalling 310 units, approved by Council. I also managed lease agreements and licensing for 715 units of non-profit temporary modular housing, working with BC Housing, the Vancouver Affordable Hosing Agency (VAHA), private property owners and non-profits. In addition to this work, I created and managed city-wide databases and maps tracking non-market housing development, collaborating with the regional health authority, BC Housing, and non-profits to provide nuanced analysis of the non-market housing sector.

Responsible for managing plans related to affordable housing and community development across British Columbia. These included Housing Needs Assessments for the communities of White Rock, Kimberley and Williams Lake, a major report on affordable housing for the City of Vancouver and a report examining partnerships between non-profits and developers for the BC Non-Profit Housing Association.

Toronto, Canada Area

I was responsible for research and analysis of economic, demographic, and infrastructure matters related to the growth of the Greater Toronto Area. I used mapping, census data, economic indicators, pro-forma data, law and policy, and other sources to develop policies, respond to government queries and provide municipalities with the tools they require to manage growth. I worked to roll out and implement the results of the Coordinated Land Use Planning Review of the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the Greenbelt Plan, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and the Niagara Escarpment Plan. I also was integral in the team that developed Ontario's first inclusionary zoning regulations.

I designed, administered and wrote a groundbreaking study of rooming houses in the Parkdale neighbourhood and developed a cross-sectoral plan for rooming house retention, renewal and development that has since resulted in millions of dollars of investment in this vulnerable housing type. The study included a comprehensive survey of existing rooming houses, analysis of the risks facing this important affordable housing stock, and the development of models for rooming house preservation and enhancement involving social finance, public and private development opportunities, and social service partnerships.

As a planner with the Planning Partnership I was responsible for several transformative planning initiatives across Toronto. I was responsible for major parts of the Liberty Village Master Plan, the Entertainment District Master Plan (and subsequent design reviews) and the Fredericton City Centre Plan, all projects that involved extensive consultation, research and design work, writing, and economic and policy analysis.I worked closely with institutional partners, private developers, local councilors and publicbodies conducting policy and planning analysis, working from the scale of long term area plans toindividual development plans.

Prepared adaptive reuse and heritage preservation studies and reports for heritage properties across southern Ontario. I performed site assessments, coordinated numerous consultants, researched properties, and organized extensive reports.

Dortmund Area, Germany

Mapped and conducted primary research on the historical urban design and spatial organization of the Ruhr Valley region in western Germany. Research will be included in an forthcoming book.

Organized numerous lectures and conferences relating to contemporary and historical issues in the arts, law, and politics of Muslim societies.
