I was able to work with the amazing Medical Records team as well as surrounding departments to learn about the flow of health information at a stand-alone hospital. Although my academic internship only lasted 6 weeks, I was able to learn quickly from a dedicated team of health professionals. - Strengthened accurate record retention, record scanning, time management, release of information, ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding, discharge analysis, HIPAA compliance, clinical documentation improvement, and health record management skills. - Redesigned the Birth Certificate working Document to be more accurate and relevant to the needs of registry personnel. - Organized and analyzed 6 months of Medical Records Office voicemail data and displayed the analysis in a logical report and Excel Dashboard.

Worked within the Career and Professional Success office to help my caseload of first-year students succeed through connecting them with campus and external resources as needed. - Maintained continuous communication through mass emails and individual outreach with my case of 210 first-year students. Achieved a 94.7% response rate as compared to the average 56% response rate. - Conducted CliftonStrengths training with individual students to explore their top 5 strengths and how this may be used to reflect upon their working styles academically and professionally.- Collaborated with other peer engagement coaches to identify any caps or trends in the experiences of first-year students and strategized how to address these trends through process improvement or strategic workflow development. - Participated in multiple student interview panels for the position of Title IX Coordinator.

My internship at OCHIN has shown me so many things about leadership, health equity, and medical technology that I would have otherwise never thought of in a classroom setting. While I learned about the delicacies of a patient record and how to keep my head in the game while de-duplicating dozens of records a day, I also learned about what true leadership and stellar company culture looks like with the very everyday interactions that I have with my extraordinary coworkers.-Maintained a workqueue of nearly 200,000 potential duplicate records in the OCHIN EPIC database while conducting nearly 10,000 patient merges or establishing "known non duplicate" (KND) status. - Attended meetings, learning seminars, and question-answer sessions with many different stakeholders via Zoom and Microsoft Office suite.

As a telescribe I have had the opportunity of seeing healthcare through a lens other than that of a student or a consumer, and have applied concepts learned in the classroom directly in the healthcare setting I work in. I utilize critical thinking, creativity, and increasingly concise communication skills in order to help my provider document their encounters with patients accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with insurance guidelines. As a healthcare administration student with little to no experience in healthcare settings other than being a patient, this job allows me to cultivate connections with the providers I work with and help see and understand their perspectives. Working remotely was purely a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic, but working remotely as a telescribe has given me first-hand experience in telehealth which I feel will be an increasingly utilized asset within healthcare continuums.

My function while working with this team was primarily honing presentation skills and devising ways to advertise various FuturePREP'd programs among my peers at the high school.- Brainstormed various strategies to increase engagement with Ottawa Area schools at all grade levels. - Participated in Ferris State University CARES classes to develop fundamental career skills.

Through the summer I worked with a program called IChallengeU, a branch of the FuturePREP'd program at the Ottawa Area ISD. Throughout my weeks there I was partnered with a team of other students from area schools and we were all assigned to the Boys and Girls Club of North Holland where we were tasked with a driving question: How to make the Boys and Girls Club more inclusive to all students? Our team analyzed the problem and after comprehensive thinking for two weeks we prepared a presentation of our solution to a panel of judges and the Boys and Girls Club itself. Out of the thirteen teams in West Michigan, our team and one other team were selected to compete against teams from the East side of the state.
