The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is a leading not-for-profit association that provides technical education and training for thousands of water quality professionals who clean water and return it safely to the environment. WEF members have proudly protected public health, served their local communities, and supported clean water worldwide since 1928.Serving first as a trustee and various officer positions, I am the board president for 2020-20201. I have chaired WEF's Governance Committee, WEFTEC Advisory Committee, and the Strategic Advisory Committee. In the latter role I led an evaluation and update of the organization’s 3-year strategic goals. I also travel extensively on WEF’s behalf, representing the federation at regional management association meetings and national water conferences. I speak on both WEF direction and strategy, as well as resource recovery and sustainable water infrastructure, and have a particular interest in distributed (decentralized) water infrastructure. The role gives me great opportunities to network and talk with the water industry, utility, and academic leaders and innovators. The Johnson Foundation, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed estate, partners with some of the most dedicated and creative individuals and organizations to develop positive and lasting change at a local, regional and national level. I worked at The Johnson Foundation to create a national dialogue on water in the U.S. At the time most Americans weren’t worried about water, and didn’t see the critical connection between water, climate, energy and food. I began the initiative from scratch, researching and identifying key topics and inviting some of the world’s best thinkers and industry influencers to discussion retreats. Through the process I led, the people I brought together, and the conversations that resulted, individuals, teased out answers, forged new partnerships, and found solutions that would ultimately advance us, as a nation, in how we manage our water. The Johnson Foundation became the leading place for the water conversation and the change that needed to be done. It was a fulfilling role as I got to interview and question leading thinkers and experts, as well as develop my own voice within the industry. During my tenure, we published more than a dozen high-level reports on the water challenge, many of which led to new national initiatives and collaborations that are credited with changing the way the U.S. approaches water security.In recognition of this work, in 2014 the Milwaukee Business Journal presented me the Woman of Influence (Public Policy) award.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is a science-based advocacy organization working for swimmable, fishable rivers throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. I joined the Board of Directors in 2002 when it was struggling and had only one part-time employee, and a year later joined the staff. In my five years as the Executive Director I grew the organization to have 5 full-time staff and 3000 volunteers, making it the largest and strongest water advocacy group in Wisconsin, with one of the largest volunteer river clean-ups in the nation at that time. I built an impressive board of directors each of whom contributed greatly over the years bringing their skills, knowledge and influence to the table. In 2004 we purchased our first river patrol boat. I'm proud to say that Milwaukee Riverkeeper is still going strong. To give you an idea of the scale of this work, here are some key facts about the Milwaukee River Basin: The Milwaukee River Basin is an 882.3-square-mile area housed within Milwaukee and six other counties. It includes the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic River watersheds which, together, contain approximately 900 miles of perennial or intermittent streams, 35 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, 57 lakes, and over 1.3 million people.

NatureServe’s mission is to provide the scientific basis for effective conservation action. I worked for NatureServe in its early years, forging the first national data-sharing agreement that allowed the creation of national databases for rare and endangered plants, animals, and natural communities. This was much harder than it may appear at first glance because it required gaining the trust of more than 50 independent natural heritage programs and their home agencies. Through the sweat, passion, and unique knowledge of their field biologists they had built proprietary databases of the most vulnerable species in the country, many of which would fetch high prices on the black market. It was my job to help them feel confident that not only were their data (and species) safe with NatureServe, but that together we could do more to advance the critical needs of protecting the biodiversity of our country than we could when we operated in isolation. Growing off of that initial agreement, the power of NatureServe’s products and services continues to astound. The unique niche that the conservation organization plays, and the high quality of its science and planning services including its Biodiversity Indicators Dashboard, led it to be recognized as a MacArthur Awardee for Creative and Effective Institutions in 2013.My other work for NatureServe included coordinating annual training conferences tailored to specific regions of the country, being a conduit for database and information needs between natural heritage programs and NatureServe, and addressing other legal, contractual, and professional development needs between NatureServe and the natural heritage programs.

I took over this role when the organization was in financial hot water and being threatened with closure. During my time in the role I turned the organization around, erased the debt and moved the organization into a positive financial position while also growing its staff and stature. Among other things, we introduced the state’s first biodiversity plan and rediscovered at least one species previously thought to be extinct.

Dover, Delaware Area

Prior to my arrival there hadn’t been anyone in this role, so I got to write the chapter’s first conversation plans and establish its preserve management system. My responsibilities also included managing hunting and agricultural leases, organizing volunteer efforts, and identifying new properties for acquisition. I also served temporarily as the Acting State Director and landed a $800K grant, the largest conservation grant for the state at that time.

Greater Philadelphia Area

In this role, I developed conservation plans, monitored endangered species including bog turtles, bat hibernacula, and managed preserves ranging from serpentine barrens, pine barrens, fresh-water marshes, and old-growth forests. I worked with volunteer groups and contractors. Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the job was passing the requirements for a “red card” for fighting wildfires and working on prescribed burns, which I did whenever the chance arose.

Upon completing my PhD in Botany and Genetics, I volunteered with The Nature Conservancy as an intern to gain experience. Within a few days I had a small salary. This experience proved critical to landing the job with the Pennsylvania Field Office which was hungry for someone who knew how to operate their biodiversity database.
