My current research line focusses on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in multiple sclerosis (MS). More specifically I am interested in to what extent mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to neurodegeneration in progressive MS. Also, I am studying the intricate interplay between inflammatory processes and neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction in neuroinflammation.

During my PhD I mainly studied the occurence of mitochondrial dysfunction in post-mortem MS tissue using various immunohistochemical and molcular biological techniques. Furthermore, I've set up various in vitro assays and models to measure or model mitochondrial dysfunction as seen in MS.
