About Maarten Fuchs
I started my career as an Oracle Middleware and Database Administrator, managing and upgrading enterprise environments of various sizes. My responsibilities ranged from implementing database backup strategies to enhancing application server performance. Transitioning into Cloud Computing, I became a passionate DevOps practitioner and Cloud Competence Lead, focusing on Cloud solutions (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS), automation tools, techniques, and security best practices. I evolved into a Cloud Native Engineer and Solution Architect, emphasizing automation, continuous integration and microservice-based infrastructure. Notably, I designed and implemented a Kubernetes platform strategy for a global eCommerce platform with Amazon Managed Services, integrated with Cloud-native tools and a fully automated and environment agnostic CI/CD pipeline. As a Cloud Native Platform Architect, I re-architected the global cloud network infrastructure and integration strategies and introduced an internal platform orchestrator to increase governance, compliance, and developer self-service.
Listed skills include Oracle, Pl/Sql, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Sql, and 43 others.

Tech Lead / Platform Engineer
Current
Cloud Native Platform Architect - Corporate Cloud Center Of Excellence
As a Cloud Native Platform Architect for the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE), I pioneered the concept of platform engineering and elucidated the value and purpose of Internal Developer Platforms. After conducting extensive research within the CNCF landscape, I evaluated various tools and designed a custom cloud management platform aimed at reducing cognitive load, lowering the burden on operational teams, and fostering developer self-service. The platform orchestrator, meticulously crafted from the ground up, integrates tools and frameworks such as ArgoCD, Crossplane, and Terraform. It offers predefined golden paths for common implementations while allowing customization for more advanced setups. The platform orchestrator seamlessly integrates with existing infrastructure, serving as a data source, but can also adopt the full lifecycle management of existing cloud resources.
Cloud Native Platform Architect - Corporate Cloud Center Of Excellence
As a Cloud Native Platform Architect for the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) I was involved in the organization’s cloud infrastructure transformation. Even though the organization has been active in the public cloud for over a decade, the on-prem integration of several global colocation facilities was still depending on static and physical equipment. Based on a third-party security assessment I was responsible to help improve the organization’s cloud security posture in terms of network segmentation and control by completely re-architecting the network implementation for both the AWS cloud as well as the Cisco SDWAN managed overlay fabric and creating a clear demarcation between the cloud infrastructure and the on-prem infrastructure. I was able to reduce the complexity and operational cost by increasing automation, governance and compliance. The global footprint of the organization demanded a multi-region hub and spoke network topology whereas multiple regions were seamlessly integrated and dynamic route advertisement for individual network segments was implemented, with a centralized ingress/egress component and end-to-end east/west traffic inspection.
Cloud Native Platform Architect - Corporate Cloud Center Of Excellence
As a Cloud Native Platform Architect for the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) I was tasked to help re-design and re-implement the organization’s cloud infrastructure and workloads. Based on a third-party security assessment I was responsible to work on reference architecture documents to outline both the intentional architecture as well as the emergent design following SAFe’s Architectural Runway. Additionally, I was responsible to shape and implement the architecture and design of a platform as a service offering developed by a dedicated product team while respecting the company’s new cloud strategy. The product offering exists out of several self-sufficient and individual Cloud Building Blocks (VPC, EKS, Ingress, Observability, Service Mesh, Serverless, …) that can be combined independently to build a product stack that matches a team’s use-case. An intuitive API and CLI allows the team to provide custom details for their product stack and as a result the complete Terraform Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is bootstrapped, made available in Gitlab and the corresponding CI pipeline will automatically provision the resources in targeted AWS accounts.
Platform Devops Engineer - Enterprise Data & Analytics (Emea)
As a Platform DevOps Engineer I was responsible to guide and assist my team in applying DevOps principles to manage and optimize data analytics environments, running numerous data pipelines to process very large datasets as efficient and possible. Large datasets from many distribution centers were loaded into AWS S3 buckets and processed by Airflow dags and Spark compute resources hosted on large Kubernetes clusters. All transactional data was loaded, processed, transformed, aggregated and integrated for business reporting purposes. In order to be able to comply faster to business needs and speed up the application lifecycle of both sofware products as well as data products, I've implemented a new branching strategy that will allow teams, together with optimized build and deploy Jenkins pipelines, to perform continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployments (CD) in a faster and more efficient way.
Cloud Native Solution Architect - Global Technology Services
As a Cloud Native Engineer I was responsible to design and implement a Kubernetes platform for cloud-native applications as a replacement for the current, outdated and unsupported microservice environments counting 80+ services each. The AWS managed service EKS was choosen, fully managed with Terraform and supplemented with many tools and systems from the CNCF foundation (eg: Istio, Helm, Fluentd, Ambassador,…) A full revision and optimization of the CICD pipeline was necessary to accomplish an even better and more automated workflow by using automated versioning, changelog management, automated deployments and artifact cleanup, self-service capabilities for the development community and much more. Additionally, a full migration plan was put in place to migrate all 80+ production services with zero downtime
Microservice Devops Engineer - Global Technology Services
As a Microservice DevOps Engineer I was responsible for the microservice platform using Apache Mesos, Marathon and Consul as the core components and additional components like Etcd, Zookeeper, Vault and many more were part of this stack too. The six environments were fully managed by Ansible playbooks in combination with Terraform to accomplish a complete infrastructure-as-code setup. By adding Kong as the API gateway and introducing a custom reverse proxy, we were able to intercept, manage, route and control all incoming traffic and apply authentication, authorization and rate limitcapabilities. At first an on-premise Kafka cluster was setup as part of these environments but later migrated to the AWS managed service MSK for maintainability and stability reasons. Aside from being involved in every major production or non-production incident, I was involved as a solution architect to add, change or remove functionality of this platform
Cloud And Devops Engineer - Global Digital Services
As a Cloud and DevOps Engineer I managed, improved and automated a global E-commerce platform and I was responsible for the infrastructure and toolset integration. The platform was setup in AWS (eg: EC2, ELB/ALB/NLB, Cloudfront, IAM, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, WAF,...) and integrated with tools like Sonar, Atlassian stack, Nexus,... to handle a smooth CICD workflow. The infrastructure is fully setup as IaaC using AWS Cloudformation and Chef which allowed us to create identical environments in a matter of minutes
Competence Leader - Cloud & Paas
The Cloud Computing and Platform as a Service Competence Centers is focussing on investigation and innovation of PaaS solutions like Cloudfoundry, Heroku, Openshift,... The workgroup was asked to explore the variety of providers available on the market and to discover their most inventive and interesting features.
Competence Leader - Cloud, Security & Devops
The Cloud Computing and Infrastructure Competence Centers is focussing on investigation and innovation of Cloud Computing providers and their solutions to have on-demand and real-time capabilities of starting, lauching and maintaining IaaS solutions. Their propositions and our interest of using a DevOps approach will bring Infrastructure, customer expectations and maintenance closer together.
System Engineer And Integrator
My responsibilities as a System Engineer and Integrator were designing and managing a Cloud-based selling platform for internal and external use. The main focus is to accomplish a stable and customer-friendly solution from the bottom up ( Network, Firewall, Database, Architectural design, Application,... ) Besides the routing of remote application development, my second focus demands scripting, automation, reporting and enhancements of the delivered solution together with full end-to-end reconciliation of all running services.
Oracle Application Server Administrator
For almost 3 years my goal as an Oracle Application Server Administrator was to manage and maintain large middleware systems. With an environment up to 20 Application Servers and over 100 Databases we were responsible to enhance, improve and extend the current environment. Setting up backup and recovery for both Application Server and Database using RMAN and scripting, setting up a failover setup, active-active and active-passive systems using dataguard and monitoring using Oracle Grid were a few of our daily tasks.
Oracle Application Server Administrator
As an Oracle Application Server Architect I was responsible to consult organizations with a midsize to large middleware environment based on Oracle technology. Most of the organizations were using Oracle Application Server 10g and upcoming Oracle Weblogic environments. Daily tasks went from deployment, patching, connection pooling, clustering and backup / recovery of their Application Server environment to enhancements, troubleshooting, debugging and scripting of all related Application Server activities
Oracle Application Server Administrator
In my early years as a professional I started to study the tasks and skills of an Oracle Application Server Administrator. My main focus was experimenting, installing and patching all different version op Oracle Application Server 10g and getting real-life experience with the core functionalities of this system
Php Web Developer
I had the privilige to work for Cegeka as an interim during my end-year as a Bachelor student in Applied Computer Science and I was asked to develop a PHP Web Application to determine, monitor and maintain DNS records.
