2022-01 - 2022-11 Iowa House District 40 Democratic CandidateMacKenzie Bills For Iowa House, Altoona, Iowa• Organized East Polk county democrats; recruited and organized 60+ volunteers to knock over 10,000 doors, including 7,000 doors myself, as a first-time candidate for elected office.• Organized a postcard campaign where the campaign sent 14,500 postcards to democrats and independents alike.• Single handedly raised over $120,000 in donations, in-kind contributions, grants paid doorknockers from national organizations, and from over 660 people.• We gained national notoriety with national organizations endorsing our race including Downballot Progress, Run for Something, DLCC, Planned Parenthood, Progressive Turnout Project and Emily's List, and the AFL-CIO.• Won 7 of the 12 precincts; lost by only 421 votes (less than 3%) and a smaller number than the third-party libertarian's 469 votes.• I outperformed the majority of the top of the ticket including: Dejear (Gov. Candidate) by 7 points, Franken (Senatorial Candidate) by 4 points, Axne (Third Congressional Representative) by 1 point, and Polk County Attorney by 3 points, proving that although Iowa had a “red wave”, it looked more purple for us.• My Republican opponent spent over $550k in negative advertising against me including but not limited to three statewide cable ads over the span of two months, digital ads, and negative texts to democrats, republicans, and independents alike.• Built out a coalition of 20+ union endorsements, local democratic groups, and former candidates and elected officials.

Using my accumulated knowledge from my experiences as an Andrew Goodman Fellow, I educate, advocate, and motivate students to be civically engaged on American college campuses, I continue to update, encourage, and mentor current Andrew Goodman Fellows and Alumni to continue their engagement.

As the Civic Engagement Lead, I handled the selection of the YALI Ambassadors across 49 sub-Saharan African countries and placed them in their respective programs across the 50 states. I developed and oversaw the orientation materials, ran orientations in Senegal and Kenya, and monitored the program throughout its completion. On the YALI team within the U.S. State Department's Education and Cultural Affairs Bureau, I wrote talking points and issue papers and briefed Senior Officials on the program's status.

Campus Election Engagement Project is a national nonpartisan project that helps America's colleges and universities get as many of their 20 million students as possible to register, volunteer, get educated, and turn out at the polls. As a student coordinator, my main job was to contact a variety of schools across the entire state of Iowa to build them a program to increase the political awareness on their campus as well as overall voter registration and education.

As Rep. Scott Ourth's intern, I saw his daily activities as a state representative. I accompanied him as he met with various constituents, lobbyists, votes, meetings, and worked with his clerk. I worked closely with his clerk to determine his schedule, respond to constituents, communicate with organizations, and research legislation going through the House.

During my time as a field intern, I became an expert canvasser, phone conversationalist, and working with Votebuilder. I saw the start to end process on how a campaign is ran. I helped manage phone events as well as host various congressmen and congresswomen.

As a page, I was there when the senators needed anything. I learned the rules and operations of the senate floor as I worked closely with the doormen and phone ladies. I answered phones from constituents and worked talked to lobbyists and constituents who wanted to see their senators.
