I am a PhD candidate at Loyola University Chicago studying the rare genetic disorder Rett Syndrome. With six years of research experience, I have worked on several projects including optimizing efficient delivery of cargo into cells using carbon nanotube disks and characterizing novel targets for neurological disorders involving endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. My PhD work has produced translational findings by first identifying targets for therapeutics using patient data, then evaluating efficacy in pre-clinical studies using mouse models with mutations commonly seen in patients with Rett Syndrome. In addition, this project has allowed me to receive training in communicating about my work through award winning public speaking and grant writing experiences. I am passionate about communicating the importance of high-impact, translational research in the field of rare disorders to scientists, clinicians, and non-experts such as families and caretakers.
