The ultimate goal of our research is to discover new molecules with medicinal and agricultural potential from endophytic fungi. To that end, we must also understand the fungi themselves and the role these molecules play in the fungal endophyte-plant host relationship. Our main research objectives are to:1) Isolate and identify endophytic fungi from Central Texas plants using culturing and DNA sequencing;2) Characterize the functional ecology of the fungi both alone and in symbiosis;3) Screen endophytic fungi for production of biologically active molecules; and4) Isolate and structurally characterize biologically active molecules produced by endophytic fungi.
