Greater Pittsburgh Region

In this role, I am primarily responsible for two programs, Farmland Preservation and the Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP). I administer Allegheny County's Agricultural Lands Preservation program by guiding farmers through the process of enrolling their land, conducting inspections of preserved farmland, coordinating with the state preservation program, and helping to manage the Farmland Preservation Board of Directors. ACAP is a grant program designed to help farmers install best management practices that will reduce sediment and manure nutrients from entering streams and other surface waters. I work with farmers to assess their eligibility, select BMPs, and guide them through the application and implementation process.

Greater Pittsburgh Region

I managed the garden’s technical needs, such as soil health and crop planning, while coordinating and educating volunteers to fulfill the garden’s mission of providing fresh produce to folks who utilize NHCO’s free food pantries. I also conducted outreach on the garden’s behalf via local events, garden tours, and presentations to school and community groups. I was responsible for project management in the planning and execution of a new four-season bioshelter and outdoor education space.

In this six-month fellowship, I wrote articles pertaining to food systems issues and news, coordinated the weekly newsletter, prepared interview materials for the organization's livestreams and podcast, conducted research, and assisted with administrative tasks.

Greater Pittsburgh Region

In this seasonal role, I engaged in basic garden maintenance and crop management, assisted in coordinating volunteers, and generated educational materials on gardening topics to support the organization’s outreach efforts.

In this position, I conducted communication and outreach related to sales, recruitment, and community programming; sourced product from local producers and coordinated aggregation and distribution; organized and oversaw the Mobile Farmers’ Market, Community Supported Agriculture program, FARMacy program, and wholesale sales (including certifications, volunteer training, and equipment related to SNAP, WIC, and SFMNP); recruited, trained, and managed AmeriCorps volunteers in the execution of programming; and consulted with farmers during pre-season planning in order to coordinate sales and production efforts.

I conducted research surrounding the upcoming 2018 Farm Bill and produced a Farm Bill Guide to aid Pittsburgh Food Policy Council Members in navigating the Farm Bill. This included understanding potential changes most relevant to their organizations and how they could engage in advocacy around Farm Bill policies.

As Market Manager, I coordinated with vendors and related organizations to maintain and enhance the farmer's market. I also worked with local government and nonprofit organizations to execute the market's acceptance of SNAP benefits and DC's Produce Plus program for low-income individuals. I secured permits for the use of the market space and coordinated policy adherence with vendors.

In this position, I worked with the food bank and various health organizations to strengthen inter-organizational partnerships and increase access to healthcare for clients of the food bank. I organized and laid the groundwork for a new diabetes initiative that positively impacted the lives of those living with the double-burden of diabetes and food insecurity.

I worked as a school-based tutor at Saghalie Middle School working with students in Core and AVID classes to help promote academic success. I organized and supervised an afterschool study club for the middle school and worked at the Westway after-school program for elementary-aged students, which continued into an all-day summer program. I also participated in other community improvement activities as an AmeriCorps member.
