Molecular Off Target Advisor
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
I was a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Ryan W. Logan at Boston University School of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Upon joining the laboratory, I successfully competed for a postdoctoral fellow position on an NHLBI T32 through the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute at Boston University. My research focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying mood and addiction disorders. My postdoctoral work utilized spatial transcriptomic, single cell transcriptomic, and single cell multiomic approaches in human postmortem brain tissue to identify molecular and cellular pathways associated with opioid use disorder.
Graduate Researcher
- Primarily worked on and led 6 behavioral and neural focused projects investigating the role of a specific brain region, the nucleus accumbens, in adaptive fear behavior. Found a novel role for the nucleus accumbens in processing threatening stimuli- Published 3 first author and 5 middle author papers.- Assisted lab members with six other projects by performing histology, behavioral testing, surgeries, and piloting new viral techniques- Collaborated and led three projects with other laboratories at BC on projects involving transgenic rat lines and RNAscope to study the roles of glutamate decarboxylase 1, tryptophan hydroxylase 2, and corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 1 in a variety of brain regions- Worked with team members (Ph.D., BS, undergraduate) including biology, physics, and cell microscopy backgrounds- Performed studies using rodent models and stereotaxic surgery to inject compounds and viral constructs targeting specific brain regions and circuits as well as ferrule and electrode implants for in vivo electrophysiology and optogenetics- Analyzed data using SPSS, Matlab, NeuroExploreer, Offline Sorter, DeepLabCut, and MedPC IV- Wrote 3 grants (NSF, DoD, NIH), assisted PI in editing lab grants, wrote my own IACUC amendments and protocols, and wrote all of the protocols and paperwork for our Schedule II DEA license- Presented six posters at six meetings and was a discussion leader at the 2019 “Physiological mechanisms and the amygdala: distributed circuitry” Gordon Research Seminar- Mentored five undergraduate researchers on a variety of techniques, presenting, and data analysis

Developed a novel and more sensitive behavioral measure for revealing alcohol-induced behavioral changes- Published one first author and one middle author papers- Mentored multiple undergraduate students on technical skills and presenting as well as mentored new graduate students on technical skills and laboratory protocols- Collaborated on >4 other projects with other neuroscience laboratories at Kansas State to develop better surgical protocols- Collaborated on 5 other projects as a team member with people with a variety of technical backgrounds (Ph.D., BS, undergraduate) including biology, chemistry, and veterinary medicine- Utilized rodent models and analyzed data using MedPC IV and Microsoft Excel- Wrote a fellowship proposal that was funded (Doreen Shanteau Fellowship)- Presented five posters at five meetings
