Infrastructure has empowering capabilities, especially amongst disenfranchised, minority, and developing communities and women within those communities. This is a large reason why I chose to pursue a career in civil engineering as opposed to a different STEM field.Civil engineering projects can influence the built and natural environments in such communities. Inasmuch, the communities can experience positive or adverse effects. The mitigation of the latter by being a technical advocate for these communities and their members on civil engineering and infrastructure projects largely motivates me in every day work.The access, or lack thereof, of infrastructure, can significantly impact the quality of life an individuals lives. Fortunately, I did not experience these negative infrastructural impacts growing up, and I hope to be part of the solution that allows every child to have the same experience I did. Civil engineering allows me to interact with the individuals in these communities to gain their insight and apply it to the technical solution.My focus and passion lies within the transportation sector, mainly because of its direct influence on how people move through time and space. Oftentimes, a well-designed and functioning system goes unnoticed, whereas a poorly designed and/or functioning transportation system is the talk of the town. The latter case is more pronounced when it has a bigger influence on people’s lives and the delays it inflicts. I want to be part of the engineering solutions that promote more efficient use of our lands and time. Outside of my engineering career, I like be outside! Snowboarding, hiking, camping, and kayaking are some of my favorite activities. If the budget allows, I also love to travel. I’ve been fortunate enough to explore Nepal, Vietnam, and Malaysia as well as Hawaii, Alabama, NYC, Indiana, Boston, New Orleans, Washington, D.C, and most of the western United States. My McBride Honors Program minor in Public Affairs provided me a solid stepping stone for my passion for policy and advocating for infrastructure betterment. I also love to give back to programs that have given me so much, predominantly in the role of a resource or mentor. Oh, and my sweet tooth often drives me to try various sweet treat recipes and share them with the people around me.
