About Maggie Farley

It takes a journalist to change the world. For journalists with transformative ideas and the passion to make them happen, the ICFJ Knight Fellowships offer the funding, mentorship and networks to help those ideas launch and live on. Maggie Farley brings her experience as a career foreign correspondent, professor and former Google News Lab trainer to the ICFJ’s mission to create a culture of news innovation and experimentation worldwide. Farley, a former Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent, worked with Google News Initiative to help journalism thrive in the digital age. She introduced thousands of journalists around the country to tech tools to enhance their reporting: verification, data visualization, and multimedia skills. (To set up a training, contact: newslabsupport@google.com)Farley was an adjunct professor in American University's School of Communications. and a JOLT fellow in engagement design for news. She also chaired the News Literacy Project's DC advisory board, and is now on the National Leadership Council. She spent a month in Asia in the fall of 2018 speaking about "Fake News" and disinformation on the State Department's International Speaker Program.As a professional fellow for two years at AU's JoLT program, she explored how engagement design can make journalism more interactive and compelling, and created online projects with newsrooms in Washington D.C., including Factitious, a news judgment game.Before working with college and grad students, she created digital education content for grades 6-12. She was a partner at LuckyG Media, a start-up creating educational content for the web and iPhone. The Chinese character learning system, featuring Lucky Grasshopper, was acquired by Outblaze Ltd. in Hong Kong. Farley has designed digital education projects for Pearson Foundation, bgC3, and the News Literacy Project.Farley hopped to new media from old media in September 2008, after 14-years as an award-winning correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. She was based in Hong Kong and Shanghai, covering Southeast Asia and then China before returning to New York as the United Nations bureau chief. She won the U.N. Correspondents' Association Gold Medal twice for reporting on Darfur and diplomatic wrangling before the Iraq invasion. She also contributed to the book "Media and Politics in Japan." She graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in East Asian Studies and has a Master's degree from Harvard in EAS/Government.
