Board Member with responsibility for promoting apprenticeships and youth employment opportunities. Founder member of the steering group of the Salisbury Education Business Partnership that works with all the Salisbury secondary schools to ensure that they have good interactions with local businesses to enable their students to make informed career choices.I also provide voluntary advice and guidance to SMEs that are considering taking on an apprentice. This includes advice on which standard would be appropriate, finding a training provider and signposting for further help. I also work with larger employers giving strategic advice on the use of their levy funds and the potential of levy transfers to benefit small businesses and enhance their corporate social responsibility.

Supplytrain CIC is social enterprise committed to helping all young people access the best employment opportunities and giving them the support they need to stay and progress in them. Since working for 2 years as a gateway organisation on the Kickstart scheme, Supplytrain has become a Flexi Apprenticeship Agency - employing apprentices on behalf of host employers and also offers a complete recruitment service for employers. Other activities include: Attending national conferences and taking part in forums and research groups that inform government policy on apprenticeships. Submitted evidence to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Employment – highlighting the problems that small businesses face when employing apprentices. Developing presentations and online quizzes that provide an entertaining and innovative way of engaging and educating businesses, parents and young people in the benefits of apprenticeships. Worked with Amazing Apprenticeships to adapt our quiz for National Apprenticeship WeekCreated an on-line National Insurance calculator which shows the financial benefits of taking on an apprentice aged under 25. Over a period of 12 years working in a senior role on many diverse projects, I gained a thorough understanding of the higher education sector. Projects included managing accounts for academic faculties with budgets of up to £20M and similar responsibilities within Estates and IT Departments. Business and process improvement work including the implementation of a new Finance System (Agresso) and the development of a new model for the allocation of central funds to schools and business units. The planning and delivery of training on IT systems and finance subjects to both accountants and non-financial staff.

An Interim post covering for the Finance Manager who was seconded onto a team implementing a new finance system. Reporting to the Director of Finance I managed 10 staff and was responsible for the day to day finances of the institution that was then called King Alfred's College.

A sixth form / Further Education College. Turnover of £5.5M with over 300 staff. I was appointed at a time when the college was in severe financial difficulties. Worked with other senior managers to ensure progress was made towards the financial recovery of the College which was then known as Cricklade College. Gained first hand knowledge of the challenges facing Further Education.

As Finance Bursar I was the senior accountant at the school. In addition to financial responsibilities I was involved in the management of major restorations of listed buildings working in co-operation with the National Trust.

Seven years as the administrative head of this English Curriculum secondary school in Doha, Qatar. Worked closely with other senior staff and board members to overcome the practical and financial problems caused by the first Gulf War.

This is where it all started! Perkins Engines offered me day-release to take (Cost and Management) accountancy exams at the local college - an Apprenticeship in all but name. That was the foundation of a long and enjoyable career. I was able to take the skills and knowledge learnt in industry to education. Now I'd like to help every young person to have similar opportunities to those that I was lucky enough to receive.
