About Matthew Grindle
Hi, I’m Matt. I’m from a small town in Indiana and I earned my Bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 2016 from Purdue University (Boiler up!). After graduation, I worked in several industries including corn starch, pharmaceuticals, and industrial fermentation. Seeing all of these industries was a great experience, but I decided one day that I needed to get an advanced degree to get what I wanted out of my career.I began working towards my PhD at Miami in Fall 2019 in Dr. Andrea Kravats’ lab. We used molecular dynamics to explore interactions of chaperone proteins Hsp90 and Hsp70. After publication I realized my true passions are more oriented towards the instrumentation and theory of measurement in physical chemistry, which led me to join Dr. David L. Tierney’s lab in Spring 2021. My current research intends to measure the electronic qualities of small, high-spin Co (II) systems. Our group combines theoretical DFT calculations with physical measurements taken by NMR, EPR, and X-ray crystallography to examine the electronic spin characteristics of small complexes.
