Sons of Norway (SofN) was established in 1895 by a group of business owners and farmers to establish the financial security of the member families and to teach and continue Norwegian cultural traditions. It has grown. A lot. SofN is now made up of 8 Districts (District 1, "The Home District", has 12,000 members and growing), including the United States, Norway, Canada, and internet based global members. There are three primary components: Financial (which is why LinkedIn categorizes it as "Insurance"). Foundation (various philanthropy non-profits), and Fraternal (cultural and philanthropy). The Fraternal group includes all Nordic countries in its goal to promote, teach, and continue those cultural traditions (other than that well-known raiding and pillaging part). Although separate, all three components intertwine and work together.www.sonsofnorway.com(highlight and right click on address for link)

  • Office Works
Design Consultant And Director Of Marketing & Sales
    Office Works Apr 2009 - Sep 2011
People who know me knew I wasn't going to sit around on my duff and collect unemployment after the Opus implosion. Office Works partnered with select office furniture manufacturers with established customers in Europe and Asia. An office furniture company? It was a return to working with interiors, reinventing skills such as learning business start-up, and a fantastic experience working with industrial designers and Chinese trade. With the Founder/CEO, I helped start up the Stateside operations which included:- Select and design the furniture line.- Developed the business processes and forms- Set up the marketing plan, website design and Facebook pages, marketing collateral, and display offices.- Communicated directly with the foreign-based in-house and partner manufacturers.- Provided quality control of product development (which included disassembling and cutting open/through parts and materials and documenting and specifying changes or upgrades).- Provided the day-to-day marketing and sales activities.- Along with our technicians, I also helped complete furniture fabrication at the Brooklyn Park facilities. As of 2011, my role became very limited under the new business plan as Office Works furnishings sold through a separate web-based trading company also owned by the Founder/CEO.An example of one of the pieces, the Office Works Progression Chair, click on the attached file at the bottom of this LinkedIn page (Yes, the colors - and others - are that vibrant).

  • Aia Minnesota
    Chairperson - Public Awareness Committee
    Aia Minnesota 1987 - 2001
    Minneapolis, Minnesota, Us
The little Chapter that could... During my tenure the St.Paul Public Awareness Committee created what was one of the largest event attractions for years at the Mall of America. 30,000+ would observe the annual LEGO Architects Design Competition - the Mall kept track for marketing statistics. We were frequently getting the AIA on TV with the LEGO event, Search for Shelter, the annual Como Zoo "Design Splash" (such as the Bird Bath Competition), Winter Carnival, etc. We obtained official Mayoral declarations of "American Institute of Architects and Architecture Week" in St. Paul and Bloomington and were asked by the Friends of the Public Library to put together annual programs for them, because ours were becoming their most successful. We had a minuscule budget, one fourth the membership that the Minneapolis Chapter had, and we were the ones making the public aware. A great group of hardworking, fun, talented people constantly, generously donating their time. We also created the Dimensions Exhibit, a display of art, photography, furniture, textiles, all produced by people in the architectural reach (we were pretty loose as to who could exhibit, as long as it was created by them, personally). The extremely successful Search for Shelter program was partially funded through our committee and we held brainstorming sessions for the facilitators to bounce their program ideas off of.During this time, I also served on the AIA Board as the Associates Representative, and Committee Co-Chairperson of the Young Architect Forum (now known as Emerging Professionals)
  • Rafferty Rafferty Tollefson
    Project Manager
Rafferty Rafferty Tollefson Oct 1997 - Apr 1999
Served as the technical coordinator for the new Science facility at the U of M - Morris and worked on a number of USPS facilities. I also had the pleasure of working directly with and learning from the passion for design of Craig Rafferty on an extensive remodel of the Cathedral of St. Paul.A breath of fresh... honesty: Craig warned that if no new work/contracts developed within "the next 30 days", they were going to have to reduce staff - me included. An honest, considerate, advance warning I will always respect.
  • Wilkus Architects, Inc.
    Project Manager
Wilkus Architects, Inc. Oct 1996 - Oct 1997
    Hopkins, Minnesota, Us
Full responsibility for the results of projects for Best Buy, Champps Americana, the City of Eden Prairie, Famous Dave's, and Timberlodge Steakhouse. Also performed QA reviews for Doolittle's, Home Town Buffet, Old Country Buffet, Roadhouse Grill, Sunset's and served as detailing and project management mentor. A retail/restaurant machine with extremely dedicated workers.Mike Wilkus, a good friend and coworker from the Weis days, was registered in 48 states and we would be working in about 1/3 of them at any one time. I remember leaving around 1:30am on a few nights. A colleague named Rich would still be there. A phenomenal worker named Jeanne would come in around 5:00am every day. Mike usually showed up between 5:30 and 6:00. The incentive for the others to show up by 7:00am was whomever got there first controlled the stereo station/cd's for the day. Not quite a round-the-clock operation, but pretty close.
  • Setter Leach & Lindstrom
Senior Project Specialist / Lead Cadd Operator - Architecture
    Setter Leach & Lindstrom Aug 1992 - Sep 1996
    Omaha, Ne, Us
Job Captain and Cadd Tech roles for numerous projects including Edina Public Schools, MN; Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD; Fairview Hospital in Wyoming, MN; White Bear Lake Public Schools, MN; McLane Company, Safeway, and Sysco nationwide. Served in "Project Architect" role for an MDI facility, Kenwood Townhomes, and Grand Forks Grocery Headquarters & Distribution Center. Also created accurate 3D model of the Minneapolis CBD for Metro 2000 and the City of Minneapolis using Microstation Project Modeler (the files were so large that it took about 18 hours to regen back then - fortunately technology evolves). In 1995, I started to explore the capabilities of Microstation Project Architect. It was loaded with what we now call BIM. Unfortunately, the data base interface between Cadd and the standard office operating system at that time was so slow that it was impractical to use. Yes, BIM is a great tool, but not a do-all. You really do have to know what you're drawing. Regardless of how you word it or justify it, "close enough" produces incorrect data.
  • Bwbr Architects
    "Project Architect"
    Bwbr Architects Apr 1992 - Jul 1992
    Saint Paul, Mn, Us
I had been doing technical detailing for a medical project, as well as design and space planning for correctional facility work. 1992 wasn't being overly kind to architecture firms and the day came when empty boxes were stacked in a conference room. Being one of the newest in the office to be hired, I wasn't necessarily surprised to be called in late in the day after seeing people being laid off all day long (healthcare projects = race to meet deadlines, then go on hold for months while the user groups and their Board review the designs). Note on my title here, as well as some previous firms: I was given the title by the firm. I realize that may be a sensitive subject for some in the profession as I am not licensed, but that's what I was called on firm paperwork, some contracts, and the box of business cards handed to me.
  • Runyan-Vogel Group
    Project Manager
    Runyan-Vogel Group 1991 - 1992
Formerly David Todd Runyan & Associates. Now known as BKV.A primer to the recent "Great Recession". With the exception of a couple of retail stores, every potential client/contract went on hold. In 1991 there was panic as to how schedules for everything were going to be handled/staffed when the design developments were approved. Office facilities, multi-family, and retail projects were being produced. But, in 1992 nearly everything was "put in the drawer".Some staff were loaned out. Since I had previously been recruited by Lloyd Bergquist, one of the BWBR partners at the time. I left after best-for-business discussions with David (Runyan) and Gary (Vogel),
  • Winsor/Faricy Architects
    "Sr. Project Architect"
    Winsor/Faricy Architects 1987 - 1991
What hat to wear today? Provided everything from week-long redline drafting to PM-in-charge roles. Work included facilities for Deluxe Check Printers, a new City Hall and Fire Station remodels for the City of Burnsville, new fire stations for Apple Valley and Minneapolis, Laurel Village projects, the award-winning Collier County Courthouse in Florida, expansion and remodel of American Red Cross labs and services facilities, and many multi-family housing units in Minnesota, South Bend, Indiana, and the east coast. I was the Project Manager for the new prototype design and rollouts for Software Etc. and GameStop nationwide. Also provided very challenging and rewarding technical work on the renovation/reuse for The Como Park Conservatory and the award-winning Earle Brown Farm.
  • Interamerican Services / Rene' V. Gumucio Associates
    Project Manager / Office Manager
    Interamerican Services / Rene' V. Gumucio Associates Nov 1986 - Aug 1987
A return trip to Rene'. I was involved in all processes of the business, from staffing, marketing to contracts to design to CD production, and CA follow-through. We had loyal housing market clients, we were getting published with awards, and were thriving in a very bad Colorado economy because of our product. Rene' was an incredible talent and person. Rene' had many contacts in California as he had been the lead design architect for Kaufmann and Broad for a number of years after he left Oscar Neimeyer's office in Rio (Rene' had been working on projects in San Francisco). Some of today's standard features came from Rene's rollout designs in California back in the 70's (some of you are old enough to remember the term, "The California Kitchen" ; that was Rene'). Unfortunately, the time came when all of our work was coming out of the California office. He chose to shut down the Colorado office. Although invited to join him out there, the choice was made to come back "home" to Minnesota.
  • Pulte Home Corporation - Colorado Division
    Board Of Directors
    Pulte Home Corporation - Colorado Division 1985 - 1987
Advisor position. Design consulting and reviews for master planning, site design, building layouts, multifamily unit plan layouts, architectural detailing, and association/covenant transitions. A learning journey on so many fronts involving one of the nation's major homebuilders.I went from the design side in my day job, switching to the owner/developer side of things serving on the board. Fascinating experience. One of the amazing things I saw was how few people could make decisions - sometimes within one meeting - that affected hundreds of acres, thousands of homes, and many people. The final, extreme example: When the Colorado economy went on hold, everything came to a dead stop. Not a slowdown; a dead stop (foundations were buried, backfilled in with only about two feet of wall showing so that the walls could be found when building restarted over a year later).
  • Seracuse Lawler & Partners / Slp Architects
    "Project Architect"
    Seracuse Lawler & Partners / Slp Architects Jun 1985 - Nov 1986
Another unforgettable learning experience. Massive expansion and remodel of Denver Stapleton International Airport*. Team lead on design presentations (degrees and where one graduated from meant little in the melting pot of Denver, CO. It was about skill. If you had good design talent and a great hand, you were used for design and presentations) and detailing, drafting, and coordinating consultants involved with the shell. I also provided the field observation for this portion of the work. Also served as "Project Architect" on Westin Hotel - Vail and head draftsman for a published office building project.* For those of you under the age of... lets say 35... what is now the eastern Denver suburb of Stapleton, used to be the fourth busiest airport in the country. One of my Walgreens projects at Leo A Daly used to be a United Airlines hangar area. One of the many Denver offices to shut down. I was number 70+/- when hired. The office grew to about 120 and then the Denver market collapsed. I was in the last group of "production" staff to be laid off before the office closed. The lone spinoff - as a group to form a firm - is Wong/Strauch Architects (the Partners in Partners). You will NOT find a more talented designer than Jam Wong.
  • Interamerican Services
    Project Manager
    Interamerican Services Mar 1985 - May 1985
Another opportunity to work with one of best in residential design. InterAmerican, because work was in the US and South America. An architect I met at Kirkham Michael & Associates introduced me to this firm owner, Rene' Gumucio. Rene' was very familiar with my residential work. I began "moonlighting" for him in the fall of 1984, mostly DD and CD drawings of houses he personally designed. He asked me to join him fulltime when KMA was obviously rethinking its Denver office operations.Rene' was good friends with Gerry Seracuse, one of the founding partners with Seracuse Lawler & Partners (SLP). When SLP recruited me for their office, Rene' knew. He told me I would be a "fool" if I didn't accept their offer. So I left with his blessing... and returned with his invitation the following year when SLP crashed.

KMA decided they wanted to become a major player in the architecture industry. The design base was headquartered in Denver. The Director of Architecture was a gentleman from HKS out of Dallas; the Director of Design was Steven Harris, currently professor of Architecture at Yale and principal in his own oft-published, award-winning New York firm; Lucien Rees Roberts, Interior Design Hall of Fame: Gustavo Bonevardi; an international award-winning husband-wife team out of Eisenman's office; Cooper Union, Princeton, and RISD grads..... the talent pool was off the charts. My first assignment was Project Lead on what would become the PA award-winning Tuscany Office Plaza in the "Denver Tech Center". 90% of the projects we designed won awards. About 20% of those were paid commissions, the rest were design "competitions". About 20% of those we were paid to design became projects. You can do the math...... The office closed. Note that Kirkham Michael continues to be a very successful engineering-only firm.I met a who's who from the world of architecture as they visited Mr. Harris. Add the staff he assembled and I was learning design theory and philosophy directly from people frequently seen on the pages of the most referred to architectural publications. Not always practical or practicable, but learned.....(The small world of architecture: I started work at Setter Leach & Lindstrom in 1992. A company memo goes out about me starting. Along comes a mechanical engineer with a big smile and handshake and a "I remember you!". Mike Anderson, who would later become President of TSP, Inc. - East Region, was with the KMA engineering team in Omaha when I was working on the Tuscany Office Plaza.)

A non-stop learning experience - both in terms of the built environment and the business world. My baptism into MAJOR development. The primary client, Mission Viejo Company out of California, was developing the town of Highlands Ranch - the entire town (my first day on the job, we drove out to one of the immediate projects being worked on and there, on top of a hill, just like the old song, I saw it actually was "where the antelopes play"). In a very short time - relatively speaking - we turned tens of thousands of acres of plains into suburbs. It was also my baptism into luxury housing. Too many stories to even begin, but here's a one-liner to put "luxury" into perspective... One house in Cherry Hills Farms (those of you who are golf addicts know of Cherry Hills Country Club, just across the "boulevard") had over $750,000 in marble - 1983 dollars. We did low-end market-rate townhouses to the biggest homes in the state. Which is why we worked 12 hours a day.......

The Twin Cities architecture market died. At the time, Weis was headquartered in Rochester, MN. This opportunity came up to do drafting work for the architectural team at a very successful design/build company.

Gary Vogel in the office. Tom McGough and a superintendent named Don (Hossalah, I think) at McGough Construction. I must have said "I don't know" at the right times, because these three people pulled me under their wings and taught and taught and taught... I had an incredible drafting hand, a do-it-right attitude, a blue-collar work ethic and they molded it every chance they got. They taught me there is no us/them in architecture/construction, there are no stupid questions, and the better you make the entire team, the better you make the project. Lessons never forgotten.

    Draughtsman
    William E. Brodersen, Architect Mar 1979 - Sep 1980
Genius. Bill had degrees in and was licensed as both an architect and structural engineer. Then, like his previous firm partner (lost to cancer), he studied under Frank Lloyd Wright.Working for him was: "You never 'do' architecture Haugen; you 'practice' architecture. You need to be constantly learning." He ran his office like Taliesin. Every minute of every day he taught. Every thought was discussed, every line had not just a purpose but a meaning, every week I was sent home with different books, writings, or drawings (like original, first edition Wasmuth plates!) to study and report on, and some weekends helped move limestone slabs to different garden locations around the manmade pond or rake the aggregate driveway. He designed everything from the building to the landscape to the furniture and textiles using natural, organic materials. A couple of houses were low-energy use, passive solar, earth-sheltered structures using local material manufacturers. Today it's called green/LEED/sustainable design. Bill's friend and colleague, Malcolm Wells called it "Gentle Architecture". Bill called it smart, common sense, Usonian design.
