About Isabela Maia, Eit

Setting goals and achieving them is gratifying and a new opportunity to creatively change habits. Over the years I have learned the importance of developing new skills and never letting other people limit what I can accomplish in my own life. In 2013 I won a scholarship to study in the United States as an undergraduate student in civil engineering. Little did I know this would change my life forever. The only thing I could imagine was the positive impact it would bring to my future, as it did. Spending 1 year and 4 months in the U.S. brought a new perspective much more open than I expected, creating a different person for the better. When I arrived, I didn’t know a single word in English, but some months later I achieved the advanced level of proficiency and excelled in my engineering coursework. I met people with different points of view from my own and from countries I never imagined going. Being immersed around so many cultures gave me a new understanding of the differences that define all of us.Since then I realized it was possible to reach whatever I wanted as long as I worked hard and used obstacles as opportunities to learn. When I returned to Brazil, working in civil engineering was not a readily available option as the country was in the middle of an economic crisis. In spite of this, I was able to use my background to get an internship involving construction developments. At the same time, I knew how important and valuable knowledge of English was and I noticed most people couldn’t adapt to English school schedules. I saw a business opportunity: teaching private English based around student schedules, not the other way around. This new chance allowed me to develop essential skills of organization, planning, leadership, finance, and communication. Over two years I was working a full-time schedule with a list of people waiting for an open space in my schedule. In March of 2019 I moved to the U.S. permanently and everything changed again. While waiting for work authorization, I developed another new passion: sustainability. I learned more about resource management and began using techniques inspired from people around the world, which I shared using social media to teach others. Adapting and constantly learning has always been at the forefront of my career and life.
