As part of the role I co-designed and led some of the most contentious and comprehensive public sector consultations in Scotland, including supporting four major service redesigns: Badenoch, Strathspey, Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross, North Coast (Sutherland), and Caithness. In making the move from working in research, ecology, and conversation, in this role, I established Highland as the first national Managed Clinical Network for stroke services. During this time the first stroke unit was established in Highland as well as two community rehabilitation teams. The developments were delivered in partnership with patients, their carers, multi-disciplinary teams and third-sector organisations.

During this early part of my career, I co-led a different approach to public relations and engagement in the Highland and Western Isles – a style and approach subsequently adopted by the RSPB throughout the UK. I supported the organisation’s first-ever asset transfer and co-produced a new approach to the management of nature reserves which actively involved local landowners and communities. High profile and contentious projects included the Uist Wader Project to safeguard internationally important populations of ground-nesting waders from introduced non-native hedgehogs.

I oversaw a four-year programme to identify, manage and legally safeguard sites of international importance. This involved me carrying out consultations with statutory consultees; responding to all correspondence and technical queries; providing advice, support and training for staff on legal issues and co-ordinating responses to casework and consultation documents.

Commissioned by the Scottish Office Education Department, this study examined the factors affecting non-completion rates of undergraduate students. It compared Scottish with non-Scottish Universities. I was responsible for: data handling, analysis and interpretation; liaising with researchers and other experts and preparation of final report.
