About Michael Robinson
Michael Robinson is a former reporter at the Telegraph-Journal, a provincial newspaper based out of Saint John, New Brunswick, where he led an 18-month series Sounding the Alarm that won the 2018 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism. His 18-month investigative series on a provincial emergency medical transport agency exposed how a critical shortage of paramedics was leading to ambulances being taken off the road, resulting in delayed response emergency times, and in some cases, linked to death. In addition to this year's Michener Award, it also received the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom Award and was named a finalist for the CJF Jackman Award for excellence in journalism two years in a row.Previous to this position, Robinson worked at the Toronto Star as a summer and year-long intern reporter. In May 2016, he was sent to northern Alberta to cover the Fort McMurray wildfire where for 12 days, he filed exclusive stories that told the stories of firefighters battling “the beast” on the front lines. The resulting coverage earned him a prestigious newsroom award. Back in Toronto, he earned a reputation for data mining freedom of information requests and sought data to tell stories that provoked outrage and empathy. His work revealed the bus routes with the highest crime rates, an emergency department statistic that hospitals record but don’t publish and how mourning families are increasingly blocking organ donations of loved ones. Originally from Thunder Bay, Ont., he’s a graduate of the joint University of Ottawa and Algonquin College Honours Bachelor of Arts journalism program with a specialization in Military Journalism from the University of Calgary's Centre for Military and Strategic Studies. As a student, he served as editor-in-chief of two campus publications, completed internships at CTV National News’ Parliamentary Bureau, the Ottawa Citizen and Thunder Bay’s Chronicle-Journal. His freelance work has been published in the Ottawa Business Journal, VICE Canada, JSource.ca and various Postmedia newspapers. He was one of three post-secondary journalism students from across Canada to receive the international European Union-Canada Young Journalist Award in 2014 for coverage on the seal hunt and Arctic Council.A year later, he was named the Canadian University Press' "Peter Mansbridge Student Journalist of the Year" and received the John H. MacDonald for "Best in News Writing" for a story that revealed potentially fatal flaws in his college’s evacuation plan for students with disabilities.
