As a distribution engineer, I designed modernized distribution lines for a major storm hardening project, where I was responsible for performing engineering design and analysis. As a part of this work, I incorporated field engineering, distribution engineering, and computer-based analysis. These functions served to strengthen and enhance (or harden) the client's electrical grid by designing distribution lines and pole configurations to withstand high wind speeds, upgrading materials and equipment, and upgrading conductor lines for larger capacity.

During my semester as a Research Assistant, I worked on two projects. The first involved a low-loss multilevel solar power inverter. My primary tasks under this project were to perform MATLAB simulations and calculations for various load conditions on the inverter model. After obtaining simulation results, I completed tests using the actual system to compare results. This project also encompassed various circuit debugging techniques. The second project I was involved in was on the topic of wireless power transfer. I was responsible for the boost converter at the end of the power-receiving circuit. Through this project, I learned circuit design in EagleCAD and soldering techniques for surface-mount devices. I also preformed battery charging tests using the output of the boost converter board.

As an intern for McLean Engineering Company, I was able to experience a variety of tasks due to the small size of the company. The company focuses on power engineering, taking on projects in the design of substations and transmission and distribution systems, joint use and attachment surveying, system planning work, and inspections. They do this through consulting for various EMCs across the several states. My primary job function was conducting archival research using the company's records dating back to 1936. Working in an interdisciplinary team with a civil engineering intern, we established an archival system that resulted in higher efficiency in being able to quickly reference plans, drawings, and notes from all project the company had completed. McLean also hosts monthly Tech Talks for their clients to discuss relevant power related topics. I was able to research and create the presentation for June on storm-hardening techniques to coincide with the beginning of hurricane season. I was also given the opportunity to accompany the engineers in the field to participate on site at the substation. In the field, I mostly observed and assisted in verifying control wiring diagrams. I also learned how to effectively communicate with both the EMC's engineers and the linemen working on the project.
