EXECUTIVE PRODUCER/WRITER From the Liverpool Docks to the Hollywood Bowl. LA/London based.Began his prolific career in his hometown of Liverpool, running drama series BROOKSIDE for C4 where he led the writers' room creating groundbreaking stories & conceived the iconic lesbian kiss. He then became Head Of Drama at PEARSON relaunching ITV cop show THE BILL & creating daily soap FAMILY AFFAIRS for the launch of FIVE. During his 8 years as BBC CONTROLLER OF DRAMA SERIES he was responsible for over 42 series including the return of DR. WHO & a diverse slate including EASTENDERS, CASUALTY, JUDGE JOHN DEED, MURDER IN MIND, and the EMMY-winning WAKING THE DEAD as well as conceiving daily daytime drama DOCTORS & co-creating BBC1 hit medical series HOLBY CITY. Mal then joined Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment (American Idol, Spice Girls) developing scripted programming for U.S. networks. He EP'd the first original commission for HULU scripted-reality show IF I CAN DREAM; was showrunner on PULSE, a drama pilot he created for THE CW; wrote and produced THIS LAND, a primetime pilot for FOX; created BORN IN THE USA a pilot for NBC; as well as creating PROSPECT PLACE, a drama series pilot for CBS. In 2012 Mal launched his own U.S. based company, POOL OF LIFE, creating hour-long drama series pilot YOUNG AMERICANS for ABC and half-hour comedy pilot BLOCKED for NBC. He was a consultant/writer on projects inc' BBC Scotland’s RIVER CITY, Sony Television, CBBC & the BFI. In 2016 Mal was asked by CBS/SONY to become SHOWRUNNER on the #1-rated daytime drama, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, achieving 8 EMMYs in recognition of his work. Late 2022, Mal was commissioned by HALCYON STUDIOS to adapt the book SAVING AMY about Amy Winehouse's time in St Lucia into a scripted limited series. He is also developing a raft of original TV series & movies for the US and the UK. In 2024, he launched MAJIC EYE PRODS with songwriter/producer David Courtney creating original stage musicals based on existing music catalogues. Most recently he has written 2 original screenplays. Mal’s achievements have been recognized with awards including BAFTAs, Royal Television Society awards, EMMYs, as well as ITV’s Special Achievement Award for his contribution to popular drama series. The Royal Television Society invited him to give the prestigious Huw Weldon lecture which was broadcast on the BBC. He is a long-serving member of BAFTA, RTS and the TELEVISION ACADEMY (EMMYs). GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY awarded him an Honorary Professorship and he is a Doctor of Letters. Mal is repped by ZERO GRAVITY.
