Malcolm Johnstone has been a downtown development & marketing specialist since 1985. He has served as manager with three downtown associations. Most currently, Malcolm served as executive director with the West Chester (PA) Business Improvement District from 2001 to 2020. He previously spent five years with the Oregon Downtown Development Association providing technical assistance to more than 40 downtowns.Malcolm is available for consultation for downtown organizations seeking to create or expand Destination Marketing, Heritage Tourism, Historic Preservation, Organizational Development, and Business Attraction.Malcolm is certified in Professional Downtown Management by the National Main Street Center. He has been a presenter at National Main Streets Conferences and provided training and presentations for statewide programs around the country. During his time with the West Chester BID, downtown West Chester has been established as a downtown destination and has received a number of awards and recognitions including the Great American Main Street Award 2017 and Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.Malcolm is the author of "For the Union: How Quaker abolition, a hanging, a slave riot, and a small newspaper in West Chester helped launch Abraham Lincoln's quest for the presidency" (Chester County Community Foundation, West Chester, Pennsylvania, 2020) https://chescocf.org/fortheunion.
