  I have been a general practitioner in both the UK and New Zealand for several decades. My current incarnation at 'The Doctors Birkenhead' is by any account the most enjoyable role I have ever had as a GP.I am a strong advocate and practitioner of evidence based medicine, but on that note I will dismiss many of the myths that underlie both mainstream medical practice and alternative medical practice where the evidence is flawed, biased, weak or non existent. The corollary of this is that I will advocate and use medicines and modalities in both mainstream and alternative practice where the evidence supports their use. This has always kept me at the crossroad where both robust scepticism and meticulous open mindedness meet. Heuristic observations of my own, over many decades have enabled me value the roles of empathy and listening to patients, which enhance the therapeutic relationship and allow trust to develop. I have grown to love my work, and love my patients after having been able to put aside some of the narrowness and rigidity of received medical dogma which marred my earlier years in medicine. I still manage to practice within our official guidelines. but notice that some of my colleagues (at St Elsewheres) do not, as they appear to use a creative interpretation of them. This I sense comes from emotive factors or financial mandates. I hold a strong belief that primary healthcare practiced wisely is critical in underpinning secondary and tertiary health provision, and can be powerfully cost effective if thoughtfully implemented.I look forward to many years of practice ahead of me. My extracurricular activities include an program to get fit again, a passion for creative photography( which I hope will lead to another show of my work), mindfulness meditation, the world environmental and political crisis and if I have time re-learning to play my flute.
