Malcolm grew up and was educated in Brisbane Australia, before undertaking his masters degree in Architecture at Yale University. He was invited to join Arup following his time at Yale. His training in Australia as an architect, along with a sense of creating new 'landscapes' led him to pursue large urban scale projects. At Arup, this interest has been developed with his leadership of the Integrated City Planning - ICP - Unit in London, which is complimented by the fundamental role that engineering systems play in making new human settlements. Key influences include a number of his teachers at Yale including Karsten Harries , and his book The Ethical Function of Architecture: Steven Harris and his book The Architecture of the Everyday, and Norberg-Schultz- Genius Loci. Lately, the enlightened approach to the built environment that Ove Arup set in motion, his idea of Total Architecture - influences the direction of his work. Some of his recent and current projects include the Wellcome Genome Campus expansion in Cambridgeshire, the revised vision for the Broadgate precinct in London, and the revised masterplan for the eastern precinct 0of Battersea Power station in London. Malcolm enjoys pursuing research, and has recently cosponsored the Living Stations research work with Network Rail. He sits on the Arup University Council responsible for the extensive learning, research and knowledge management in the Arup Group.
