Profile bio

About Michael Manning

I tackle fisheries and wildlife issues with meticulous, detail-oriented strategies based on my experience in GIS analysis and mapping, as well as data collection and analysis. My interest in wildland fire ecology began while serving as a Firefighter/Paramedic and Emergency Operations Analyst. In the Spring of 2017, I completed a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife Science. After completing my post-bacc, my wife and I moved across the country so I could focus on graduate school. Since my post-bacc had a strong wildlife & ecology focus, I applied to Oregon State's graduate certificate program in Fisheries Management. This eventually lead to my transferring into the M.S. program in Fisheries Science in the winter of 2019. I successfully defended my thesis, “Use of Landscape Characteristics to Quantify Hybridization Risk Between Native and Introduced Salmonids” in November 2021, and graduated on December 10th, 2021. Now, as I begin the next part of my journey, I am looking for opportunities to apply my education and past experiences to the field of conservation biology. This was a lifelong dream, and while it may have taken a bit longer to achieve, it has been well worth it.“Be curious, and however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.” ~Stephen Hawking

Listed skills include Emergency Management, Gis, Disaster Response, Public Safety, and 33 others.

Jan 2019 - Dec 2021

Biological Science Technician - Aquatics

Seasonal position where work included conducting field surveys focused on updating stream data within the Willamette National Forest using LIDAR imagery and GIS data collection tools. Also participated in stream restoration project planning, fish salvage, and road decommissioning projects.

Apr 2018 - Oct 2018

Naturalist Intern

Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve

By conducting various studies within the Nature Preserve, I have achieved increased financial support as well as tremendous interest. My studies are each aimed at evaluating the health and stability of the wildlife population within the Preserve. My positions have historically involved analyzing current and historic data and I’ve used these skills extensively during my internship to project species population growth or decline. My key projects are highlighted below, but I’ve also been contributing to the population management of white-tailed deer by documenting age, sex, health, and disease of harvested animals and maintaining spreadsheets for regional state biologists. I’ve also developed a streamlined methodology for mappings species studies using GIS to create polygons of typical target home ranges laid over area maps and then determine the GPS coordinates of each randomly selected study site.

2011 - Aug 2016

Emergency Operations Analyst, Fire & Ems Operations/Gis

My primary goal is to improve the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of emergency response operations. By studying historical incident data and conducting hazard and risk assessments, I’m able to identify gaps in capabilities and factors contributing to negative outcomes. This allows me to guide future response planning and resource deployment. I’ve also worked on several projects, which sometimes involve engaging with local representatives, department heads, local politicians, and organization leaders. I’m an expert at managing these relationships and acting as a resource throughout each project. Most of my projects involve GIS analyses of emergency response capabilities for fire departments throughout the US and Canada. By organizing and manipulating geodata, I’ve been able to create and publish comprehensive maps that illustrate coverage gaps as well as modeled results of different resource deployment configurations to improve coverage and service delivery.
