About Manuel Acevedo

Manuel Acevedo combines photography, projected image, drawing, flipbook animation, murals and large scale public art to explore how light and movement shape experience. Through various media he employs visual language in ways that transform flat, static images into active spaces of experimentation. Acevedo is the recipient of the 2019 Colene Brown Art Prize at BRIC. He has been exhibiting his work in the United States and abroad for over thirty years. Recent solo and group exhibitions include: Mirror Mirror at Express Newark – Rutgers University (2018); Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography at El Museo del Barrio (2018), Senses, Art in Odd Places, NY, (2017), elmueso@sva at SVA Chelsea Gallery (2016), Then and Now, Center for Book Arts, NY, (2015), Prickly, Tender and Steamy: Artists in the Hothouse at Wave Hill, Bronx, NY (2014), Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. (2013), Round 36, The House the Alhacen Built at Project Row Houses in Houston, TX (2012) and Al-Ghaib Aesthetics of Disappearance at Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (2011). In 2010, Acevedo’s critically acclaimed Keys of Light exhibition was presented at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, TX and The Bronx River Art Center. He has had solo exhibitions at Jersey City Museum and the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies. Among his awards and residencies are those received from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Visual Artist Network, Longwood Arts Project, Mid-Atlantic Foundation, Studio Museum in Harlem, and AIR. Acevedo is based in the Bronx, New York.Acevedo is currently developing large scale public art projects, a photo-based book project highlighting the Wards of Newark series, text-based (typographic) visuals and architectonic models for large-scale interactive spaces. He conceptualizes and processes ideas all the time - in conjunction with raising a family in the Bronx, teaching, making site-specific installations and participating in residencies. His work is built on thirty-five years of practice inspired by the richness and complexity of urban experiences and city lore.

Conduct multi-session workshops for 5th and 6th grade students in collaboration with the Chatham Department of Education. Responsibilities include designing and facilitating curriculum-aligned art making experiences using flip book animation and pinhole photography. Instruction in the Flip-book Animation Workshop includes a comprehensive exploration of animation, construction of moving image books, and video recording. The Pinhole Project engages students in the basic construction of a camera from a can or box, exposing 4 x 5 inch color transparency film and making direct positives to record landscapes, urban community, and portraits.

Developed and facilitated 9-session art programs for 4th-8th grade students in Newark public schools. Responsibilities included meeting with school administrators and art teachers to align curriculum, lesson planning, organizing and guiding museum trip, instruction in basic drawing concepts including perspective, introduction to photographic techniques and image scanning, writing exhibition descriptions and labels, preparing and hanging student exhibition at Newark Museum, and conducting project assessment.Recent programs include the Imagine Project and the Newark Re-visions Project, designed to help participating students develop critical thinking skills through observation, conceptualizing and reasoning. Drawing inspiration from their personal lives as well as perceptions of the school and surrounding neighborhood, the students used these visual devices to present alternative visions of their community. For the Newark Re-visions Project students used disposable cameras to survey their local neighborhoods and use as reference for visualizations that depicted before and after scenes. The visionary and realistic drawings expressed ideas about urban revitalization in Newark neighborhoods by converting economically challenged areas into beautification projects.
