Combining the use of industrial wastes existing in the north of Portugal with a high-quality design, new products were developed that follow the new market trends, aesthetically attractive and with low cost, that responds both to the consumer's desire and the current international standards. In addition to the development of urban furniture using industrial wastes, the project also intended to develop the technological process inherent to the industrial manufacturing as well as to test the products on a pilot scale, also evaluating the economic and environmental impact of these processes, when applied to the different types of industrial waste. This project aimed to develop new binders, financially and environmentally more attractive than the traditional ones, and, simultaneously, with a comparable mechanical performance when added to the soil. In the scope of this research project, besides a very extensive laboratory experimental campaign, a real scale prototype of an experimental landfill was constructed to evaluate “in situ” the behavior of the best mixtures tested in the laboratory, in real conditions.
