An award-winning journalist and broadcaster for more than 30 years, Cool Classics! Founder and Director Mara Tapp’s work has appeared in Chicago magazine, the Chicago Reader, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, Catalyst, Bookforum and Playbill, on many public radio and television broadcasts, as well as on public access television. During the seven years she spent doing The Mara Tapp Show on Chicago’s National Public Radio affiliate, she had the privilege of interviewing children’s authors including Maurice Sendak, Eric Carle, Tomie de Paola, the late Madeleine L’Engle and the late E.L. Konigsburg.All of us at Cool Classics! are honored to be among 50 of 342 applicants from 42 states chosen for recognition as a 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award Finalist by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.   Cool Classics! is honored to be among 12 winners of the 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. The award is given by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in cooperation with the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. Cool Classics! is a book-based, after-school program that uses arts-integrated curricula to improve literacy and reading comprehension while developing critical thinking skills and introducing Chicago public school elementary schools students to a wide range of arts, humanities and cultures. We aim to expand participants’ sense of the world, improve their academic and analytical skills while building lasting communities of our students, their families, teachers and school administrators to insure success as they continue their education throughout their lives.
