Profile bio

About Marc Carlson

Marc Carlson is a Lead Data Scientist and Computational Biologist at Seattle Children's. He possess expertise in data analysis, bioinformatics, genomics, programming, r and 12 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I met Marc in 2007 when he joined the Bioconductor core team at the Hutch. I'm myself a Bioconductor core team member since 2005. Since its beginning, the Bioconductor project has been providing high quality annotation packages that are easy to use and allow reproducible research. With his strong background in biology and his skills in programming and data management, Marc quickly became the biological annotation expert that the project needed. Since he joined the project, Marc has been playing a central role in updating, packaging and documenting the hundreds of annotation packages that are part of every Bioconductor release. The diversity of biological annotations, their size, their ever evolving nature, and the need to make them easily accessible from within the Bioconductor environment and to update them for each Bioconductor release (twice a year), are the challenges that Marc has been successfully dealing with. Here are the skills that in my opinion contributed to Marc's success in that role: - Marc has a strong background in biology and is passionate about it. He understands how scientists work and what they expect from our software. This gives him the ability to anticipate the needs of the end users. In particular he understands the need for high quality annotations that are easy to use and allow reproducible research. He also has very valuable insight on what new types of annotations the project should support in order to keep up with emerging research domains. - In addition to being a passionate biologist, Marc has strong skills in data management, including data base design and interfacing with R. - He understands the importance of providing software that is user-friendly. To that end, Marc has always excelled at documenting and supporting the software via the Bioconductor support site and mailing lists, and at taking into account user feedback to improve our software and drive its new developments. Marc has also been involved in numerous Bioconductor courses and workshops over the years as an instructor and with positive feedback from the students. - Marc is patient, kind, and a nice person to work with. For each new Bioconductor release, Marc is successfully interacting and coordinating with many other annotation contributors, sometimes under the pressure of very tight deadlines. AFAIK his collaborators have always been able to deliver in time and Marc has never missed a deadline. - Marc is a fast learner. When he joined the project in 2007, only a couple of months before a Bioconductor release, I worked closely with him to set him up as fast as we could in preparation for the upcoming release. In only a few weeks Marc took over his role as the new Bioconductor annotation expert. He was clearly committed to make his first Bioconductor release a success. And it turned out to be one. It has always been a pleasure for me to work with Marc. " and "Marc is very smart with a profound depth of knowledge. He's also very careful and thorough. Marc handles everything to do with annotations in the Bioconductor project, and also writes a lot of R code. He's also very helpful and patient with our user community. "

Listed skills include Data Analysis, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Programming, and 13 others.
