Feb 2024 - Present

Program Associate, Communications & Metrics

San Francisco, Ca, Estados Unidos (Remotely From Barcelona And Freiburg)

As a member of the Programs team, I coordinated with partners (mostly Indigenous groups in the Amazon and worldwide), software developers, and others, to co-create technology to support communities on the frontlines who are working to defend their human and environmental rights. I was also leading the Communications and Metrics teams as well as the creation of guides and training content for earth defenders and human rights activists. Part of my responsibilities was also the implementation of workshops, and offering technical support to partners.

Oct 2020 - May 2023

Resident Lecturer In Political Ecology

Perú

As a political ecology lecturer, I strived to offer US university students an overview of the Environmental Justice movement worldwide and in Peru, learn about Indigenous organizations and manners of contestation in Latin America, and the increasing body of participatory and decolonizing methodologies. Through hands-on classes and workshops, the participation of key local actors in our course, and multiple trips to rural and Indigenous territories and organizations, we aimed for students to learn about the struggles of communities on the frontlines as well as the relevance, benefits, and challenges related to the consideration of Indigenous and local knowledge, practices, and perceptions in the context of conservation, policy fora, and scientific research, while encouraging collective reflection on different ethical aspects that need to be considered when undertaking research-in-action with Indigenous communities.

Jan 2020 - May 2020

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Icta

As a Post-Doctoral Fellow, I led the creation, maintenance, and analysis of the Citizen Science website Amazo'N'Oil, hosted in Zooniverse, to research the impacts of oil pollution in the Peruvian Amazon on animal and human populations. The website was a tool to analyze the thousands of video footage of wildlife interacting with (i.e. ingesting) oil spills in the Peruvian Amazon, which were recorded through a trap camera program in collaboration with local environmental monitors.

Jan 2018 - Nov 2018

Phd Student

Barcelona And Perú

My experience as a Ph.D. student began with an invitation of local Indigenous Peoples from the Peruvian Amazon to carry out a research project on the pollution of their lands by oil companies and its impacts on human and animal populations. Based on Participatory Action Research, the project was a textbook example of interdisciplinarity, rooted in collaborative teamwork and the combination of diverse tools and skills from a myriad of fields, including tropical ecology, GIS, epidemiology, ethnobiology, and environmental forensics among others. Local communities were an active part in the design and implementation of the project and I had the opportunity to spend 9 months living and conducting fieldwork in Indigenous territories of the Peruvian Amazon. I also carried out the laboratory analysis to detect oil pollution (specifically heavy metals and PAH compounds) in soil, water and animal tissue samples.
