About Marc Unger

Marc A. Unger received his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Caltech. During a postdoc in Applied Physics in Professor Steve Quake’s lab, he invented Multilayer Soft Lithography, the foundational technology of Fluidigm Corporation. The first paper describing the technology was published in Science and has now been cited more than 3000 times. He joined Fluidigm and drove the development of the core technology, manufacturing, and product lines; he also restructured and rebuilt the Marketing organization. During his tenure the company went public and achieved product revenues greater than $100M per year. He co-founded Hyalos Therapeutics in early 2017. He is now Chief Scientific Officer at Elegen Bio, which is using microfluidics for synthetic biology - oligosynthesis and gene assembly.

Marc Unger Work Experience Details
  • Elegen Bio
    Chief Scientific Officer
    Elegen Bio
    California, United States
  • Hyalos Therapeutics
    Chief Executive Officer
    Hyalos Therapeutics Dec 2016 - Aug 2019
    • Founded Hyalos with Professor Paul Bollyky and Nadine Nagy of Stanford University, based on first-in-class oral drugs which induce regulatory T cells by inhibition of hyaluronic acid. Treg induction has promise against multiple autoimmune diseases, including Type 1 Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.• Formed the company, raised seed funding, recruited CFO, CMO, and medicinal chemist; developed company strategy; negotiated IP license with Stanford; filed IND with US FDA; organized clinical trial; shut the company down when we were unsuccessful at raising Series A.
  • Fluidigm Corporation
Executive Vice President Of Research And Development And Marketing
    Fluidigm Corporation Aug 2015 - Dec 2016
    South San Francisco, California, Us
    • Member of the Executive Staff: set company strategy and goals, performed diligence for potential deals and acquisitions, and presented to the Board of Directors. Drove R&D Portfolio Management and New Product Commercialization processes.• Stabilized, restructured, built out, and managed the Marketing organization: reorganized the department around business objectives, supported sales organization, product management, and strategic marketing. • Managed both Marketing and genomics R&D. Recruited high-caliber, experienced senior VPs for Marketing and R&D.
  • Fluidigm Corporation
Senior Vp R&D, Vp R&D And Cto
    Fluidigm Corporation Sep 2012 - Aug 2015
    South San Francisco, California, Us
    • Member of the Executive Staff: duties as above.• Responsible for all genomics product development at Fluidigm – Single-Cell and Production Genomics product lines; instrumentation, microfluidic chips, reagents, and software.• Responsible for all genomic research and technology development at Fluidigm – new hardware platforms, microfluidic research, molecular biology protocol development, single cell biology applications, and bioinformatics. Extended single cell genomics protocols to include RNA, DNA, and Protein.• Manage the genomics R&D organization: recruit and organize the team, manage the project portfolio and budget (> $20M/year), track goals and objectives, report progress.
  • Fluidigm Corporation
    Chief Scientific Officer
    Fluidigm Corporation 2007 - 2012
    South San Francisco, California, Us
    • Championed, and responsible for development of, Fluidigm’s Single-Cell Genomics product line – C1 instrument, microfluidic chips, protocols, and bioinformatic package for single cell genomic analysis. The C1 was a breakthrough in single cell genomics, enabling researchers to capture, image, and and analyze up to 96 single cells at once. • Extended high-throughput PCR product lines: new chip formats (96.96, 192.24, and FlexArray), new chemistries (DeltaGene reagents for gene expression, SNP Type reagents for genotyping), and assay design services. • Led development of a system for cell biology (the Stem Cell Culture System, with a grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine).• Drove new technology development: created the Gen 2 platform, increasing the control complexity of microfluidic chips by six orders of magnitude; built fluidic logic, enabling autonomous chip control; integrated affinity columns into MSL chips, and developed a new chip material (SIFEL) for creating MSL chips with dramatically higher chemical resistance.• Managed steadily increasing amounts of the R&D organization, budget, project portfolio, and product development process.
  • Fluidigm Corporation
    Director Of R&D
    Fluidigm Corporation 2003 - 2007
    South San Francisco, California, Us
    • Led development of and launched the BioMark product line: instrumentation, reagents, software, and microfluidic chips for Gene Expression, Genotyping, and Digital PCR. BioMark gives orders-of-magnitude advantages over conventional PCR systems in throughput, labor, and reagent consumption. • Invented and developed the integrated carrier, Fluidigm’s now-standard commercial “world to chip” interface. Carrier was developed for Fluidigm’s first product line and subsequently implemented for all product lines.• Extended fabrication process capabilities, increased throughput, and dramatically reduced chip cost through continued development of fabrication tools and technology.
  • Fluidigm Corporation
    Director Of Microfluidic R&D
    Fluidigm Corporation 2000 - 2003
    South San Francisco, California, Us
    • Invented and implemented fundamental MSL fabrication tools and technology.• Drove new device design and characterization (e.g. normally closed valves, multiplexers)• Led team to establish feasibility of high-throughput PCR in chip. • Taught “Microfluidics 101” (and 102) to train Fluidigm employees in the basics of microfluidics (and microfluidic engineering)• Helped establish Fluidigm’s fundamental IP position
  • California Institute Of Technology
    Postdoctoral Fellow
    California Institute Of Technology 1998 - 2000
    Pasadena, Ca, Us
    • Invented Multilayer Soft Lithography. MSL enables the creation of active valves and pumps using silicone rubber (PDMS). Science paper has > 2500 citations.• Built surface chemistry for attaching DNA to surfaces with retention of full ability to serve as enzyme (e.g. polymerase) substrate. Chemistry adopted and used by Helicos (single molecule sequencing company).• Imaged single fluorophore molecules with a conventional fluorescence microscope.
