From the days of visiting my father’s office and watching the blueprint machine in action, to sitting at the drafting table in his home office with the parallel bar, triangle, and a vinyl record spinning, I guess I always knew I wanted to be an architect. It started with a love of drafting, learning the techniques of representing objects both technically and beautifully. My elementary school class entered a classical architecture competition at Emory University, and my father volunteered a ton of time helping us build a large model of the Pantheon out of foam board and plaster. I think it was at ¼” scale. I was hooked, and what a highlight it was to travel with him to Rome 15 years later and stand in that wondrous portico together. My design philosophy has always been grounded in my time spent volunteering and on the staff of the Appalachia Service Project performing and managing home repairs for those in need. There’s beauty in sensible design and the challenge of figuring out how to maximize the value of your work. I fell in love with vernacular design again while designing in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Limited materials, labor pool, and a site without electricity or water can really drive creativity. I have found my forever home in Sports design. I am proud of the eye-catching beautiful, high-tech design that our team produces, but by and large we are providing sensible designs for departments of hard-working people who must get the maximum value out of each and every project. Seeing that vision come to life from the first amorphous ideas in your head never gets old. Nor does watching your building on ESPN, or seeing a team of young men or women lose their minds with excitement over the new space we have created for them. The journey has always been the destination, whether it was spreading plaster with my elementary classmates, swinging a hammer on a hot roof, or analyzing our future building site from the sidelines of a football game. There’s beauty at every step.
