As the Program & Policy Manager for CA4Health I support the overall functioning of the CA4Health community and its equity, advocacy, and capacity building activities. Responsibilities include organizing and capacity building efforts for local/regional/statewide policy change, collaborative statewide advocacy, material development and communications support, and outreach efforts. In this role, I lead and support technical assistance on topics like resident engagement, local partnership development, equity and advocacy. My work seeks to effectively manage relationships and ensure effective engagement and outcomes with diverse stakeholders. I take independent initiative and actively participate in developing policy priorities and support funding partner’s legislative and policy needs. This includes tracking, reporting, and analyzing various legislative and regulatory actions at the federal and state level. My work also includes various research regarding policies and practices emphasizing health equity and racial justice approaches.

Ensured affiliate members were constantly informed of NAMI California policy priority activities and provided with forums through which to advocate on these issues.Drafts articles and various communication materials to support grassroots efforts on advocacy initiatives and responds to requests for information from members, government representatives and partners. Constantly produces reports on specific issues and legislative priorities based on membership feedback and current state/local proposals. Worked with the policy team to review legislation, research and provide survey data on specific issues. Mobilized individuals, families and other advocates in sharing lived experience to influence and inform policy. Supervises Statewide Advocacy Coordinator, and other staff as assigned.

In this role, I was in charge of projects ranging from cultural and linguistic adaptations of NAMI’s signature programs to diverse community stakeholder activation and mobilization. The Community Engagement Manager leads implementation of Cultural Competence webinars and Multicultural Symposiums that work to provide materials on ways to engage diverse communities in a meaningful manner.

Trains individuals, families and organizations to advocate effectively at the state and local level. Maintains consistent communication and connection with NAMI affiliates, advocacy network members, partner organizations, and other relevant parties.Mobilizes NAMI California’s advocacy network to advocate for state policy priorities through grassroots campaigns, including organizing trips to Sacramento, collecting testimonials, securing support letters, and other campaign activities. Maintains a working knowledge of current issues in mental health policy. Creates and distributes written information to advocacy network members. Recruits individuals and families to participate in state policy workgroups, meetings and other relevant forums interacting with California Legislature representatives.

While working at the Youth Leadership Institute I worked on San Francisco programs including; Community Transformative Initiative (CTI), Students for Healthy Neighborhoods (SHN), and Youth Philanthropy Initiative (BLING). Duties included recruiting and retaining youth, event planning and execution. Facilitated workshops to youth including food justice curriculum across two high school sites located in the Bayview and Mission districts.
