Occupational Therapist In Crisis Assessment And Treatment Team
Senior Occupational Therapist
Previously I was employed as a senior occupational therapist and member of the multi disciplinary team in an acute mental health unit. Overall the purpose of my job to provide a client-centred occupational therapy service to an identified caseload of client’s who experience mental health problems with the aim to improve everyday function and prevent disability. I use evidence based practice to apply clinical skills and reasoning in occupational therapy, and implement collaborative working with clients to reflect a holistic approach to identify needs. My key responsibilities are to provide assessment and intervention for clients referred to me, taking into account their mental health difficulties, social situations, environments, and physical difficulties as relevant. Respecting culture and diversity is a role that I take very seriously. In order to facilitate individuals to achieve optimal independence with occupational functioning, I implement client-centred practice by working in partnership with clients to negotiate occupational therapy goals. I identify and address risks associated with clients’ ability to function independently, taking into consideration risk reduction and/or positive risk taking. I also consider implementing additional support to practice or re-learn skills, and make recommendations for alternative housing. My role requires me to collaboratively work with outside agencies to support working towards social inclusion. Effective communication with clients, family members, carers, the multi-disciplinary team, and other organisations is another key responsibility, along with sustaining accurate, clear and concise clinical records. I actively participate in group-work, and I am currently involved in facilitating and co-facilitating activity based and self-help groups. Another key responsibility is to evaluate the occupational therapy programme as well as contribute to the development of the service to enable the improvement of service delivery.
Community Occupational Therapist
Previously I was employed as an occupational therapist and member of the multi disciplinary team for a new mental health assessment team. This service was in the development stage and I had been part of the team shaping its future. I was working in an OT specific and generic manner, primarily with adults that were clustered between three and eight. I was responsible for completing generic initial mental health assessments for new referrals to the team, taking into consideration each individual’s described needs in the context of the challenges they are facing due to mental health difficulties.
Community Occupational Therapist
From March 2009 I was employed as an occupational therapist for a community mental health team working with adults that experience severe and enduring mental health problems. My key responsibilities were to provide assessment and intervention for clients referred to me, taking into account their mental health difficulties, social situations, environments, and physical difficulties as relevant. I was the teams ‘Investment in People’ representative, which involved regular attendance to multi-disciplinary meetings to ensure the service was meeting the standards, and that staff members had appropriate access and opportunity to learning and development. I also engaged in the development of others, taking an active role in educating students of my own and those from other professions. My role required me to be an active part of the multi-disciplinary team, which involved liaising with, and understanding profession specific roles of a range of professionals, for example, consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, community psychiatric nurses, and support workers.
Occupational Therapist
During the first few years following graduation I worked in four different speciality areas within a rotation context. I complied with the COT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, as well as acted in concordance with both nationwide and local policies and procedures. From August 2006 until February 2009, I was employed on a mixed rotation which covered six months in the following areas: general medical, specialist older adult mental health, inpatient physical rehabilitation, and one year in an adult acute inpatient mental health service. My key responsibilities were to provide assessment, treatment planning and intervention to optimise clients’ ability to function independently. I represented OT within the multi-disciplinary team and participated in relevant meetings and handovers. My role required me to communicate effectively with clients, carers, family members, and the multi-disciplinary team and to demonstrate respect for culture and diversity.
