Archmospheres is a private limited company registered in London with Companies House. The company was founded with two goals. The first is easily achieved thanks to our experience and expertise in the field. It is simply to provide our clients with the images they require, produced to meet the professional standard of the architectural press. Additionally, we work hard to restore the sense of place that is significant to architecture but lacking in most commercial photography. This second goal is achieved through attention to atmosphere. But what is an atmosphere, and how do you transmit it through imagery? Architects like Peter Zumthor and Juhani Pallasmaa have addressed the first part of that question. Read their amazing books and visit their buildings. The second part presents an opportunity for photographers to add their voice to this discussion.We offer three ideas for a different way of working: commissions based on dialogue, atmosphere as part of the subject matter, photographic research into each project instead of an out-of-the box solution. We see all of these as an opportunity for architects to extend the reach of their audience, get more from photographers, and communicate thorough compelling images. This is new means of seeing architecture which complements standard architectural photography. We are not out to replace it.So what is the atmosphere of architecture in a photograph? In conventional images, it is often sterile - that of blue & white images which have replaced their black & white predecessors. To us that means an opportunity to do more through archmospheres: images of architectural atmospheres. Atmosphere is what connects a person to the photograph they are looking at. Atmosphere situates architectural work in photography. Atmospheres are important, inter-subjective, understandable. Most of all, they should be as varied as the world itself. I am researching the relationship between photography and design aspects of architecture at Aalto University. I continue to work as a freelance photographer and teach a few workshops at Aalto University and The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in architectural photography and lighting with a focus on the production of atmospheres.
