About Marco Ottaviani

Problem solving on battery legislation and multimodal transport regulations.Batteries are subject to numerous directives and regulations, due to the chemicals used, the containment of emissions into the environment and occupational exposure limits during the production process, the rules for placing on the market, the restriction of their use in equipment or vehicles, the obligations of collection, treatment and recycling of waste. Many types of batteries are classified as dangerous goods for transport, with increasing restrictions in road, sea and air transport mode. The skills and experience acquired, also in an international context, allow me to address these issues with a broad vision and a multidisciplinary approach offering to producers, importers, distributors, users, waste collectors and recyclers, a comprehensive support on legislation and regulations applicable to portable, industrial and automotive batteries.I graduate in Chemistry at the University of Rome with a experimental thesis on secondary lithium batteries, then I worked almost 20 years at Fiamm SpA, leading lead-acid battery manufacturer, with roles of increasing responsibility in R&D, process development, environment, health and safety, dangerous goods and energy, becoming Corporate EH&S Manager coordinating the activities of 11 Plant EH&S Officers in Europe and USA. Since 1996 I was the Corporate Energy Manager and from 2001 also the Safety Adviser for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. From 2005 I am an independent consultant on regulatory, environmental and safety aspects applicable to the production, transport and marketing of batteries.I am active member of european and national committees supporting battery industry (EUROBAT, EPBA, ANIE CEI), and have a specific competence in transport of dangerous goods and wastes management. As DGSA, expert in lithium batteries, I am member of Recharge delegation to UN Sub-Committee of Expert on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Geneva
