Herring Research Group, Colorado School of Mines, Chemical and Biological Engineering Dept.Principle Investigator: Dr. Andrew HerringDevelopment of Anion Exchange Membranes for Water Electrolysis/Hydrogen Fuel Cells- Designed/synthesized di-functional chain transfer agents for polymerization into anion exchange membranes- Synthesized triblock copolymer anion exchange membranes with hydrocarbon backbones, quaternary ammonium functionalized groups via ROMP and RAFT polymerization techniques- Fabricated electrode materials utilizing PGM and non-PGM catalysts, novel ionomer material- Characterized mechanical/chemical properties via ex-situ EIS, DSC, NMR, DMA, FTIR, SAXS, and GISAXS- Fabricated/operated water electrolysis cells utilizing AEM; tested performance, durability in various conditions with various catalysts, supporting electrolyte- Fabricated/operated AEM fuel cells; tested performance in varying temperature/humidity environments - Analyzed degradation and relevant change in membranes after 1h, 5h, 100h, 500h operation- Led team of 6 undergraduates in synthesizing, fabricating, and investigating AEM materials, fuel cells, and electrolyzers
