Marc Shapiro is an award-winning journalist, photographer and musician. His articles and photos have been picked up by the Associated Press and Huffington Post, and featured on the websites of SPIN and Relix magazines. He is currently an editor at Johns Hopkins Medicine.Marc began his career at The Maryland Gazette and The Carroll County Times, where he covered the Great Recession, crime in low-income neighborhoods, commercial development and municipal government. At The Times, his investigations into certain closed-door practices of the City of Westminster’s government earned much praise from the community and prompted procedural changes. Prior to joining the Jewish Times, Marc served as the editor of hyper-local news website Owings Mills-Reisterstown Patch.Marc joined the Jewish Times as a staff reporter in June 2013, became a senior staff reporter in October 2014 and managing editor in June 2016. He won a number of American Jewish Press Association Simon Rockower Awards and Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association awards for articles on Maryland’s medical cannabis program, musician profiles and his coverage of the 2015 Baltimore uprising after the death of Freddie Gray and the Jewish community response, among others. Marc also wrote about religious observance in prison and told the stories of Iranian Jews who endured treacherous journeys to Baltimore around the time of the 1979 revolution.In addition to SPIN and Relix, Marc’s photography has been featured in luxury travel magazine Inspirato as well as “9:30 – A Time and Place Oral & Pictorial History,” the 35th anniversary book of the world-renowned 9:30 Club.Marc joined Johns Hopkins Medicine in March 2019 as an editor in marketing and communications, where he writes and edits medical and health articles for a variety of in-house publications.
