Taken on as a young apprentice at the age of 17, I worked with an experienced lift engineer, who has been in the profession for over 40 years, carrying out a large project at Newcastle Law Courts, installing three glass passenger lifts for Schindler. This Job helped Develop practical skills such as drilling, tool handling and using lifting equipment, and also taught me how parallel processes and keeping to deadlines aids efficiency when meeting client requirements. It also taught me that the failure of keeping to project deadlines can cause a knock on effect that could be detrimental to other team members’ work. This would ultimately cause the extension of deadlines, added wage costs and penalty fees. While in this fast paced environment, I also learnt to thrive under pressure and that team work is essential for meeting unified goals. Projects were located in Newcastle, doing sub-contracted work for Mitshibushi and Thyssen Krupp, and also in London, Barnsley and Scotland.
