I’m a full stack senior software engineer with over 20 years of experience in a wide range of technologies: Spring, Hibernate, Django, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Vue.js, Angular, and more. I love shipping new features into production that delight users. I also enjoy being a force multiplier in teams by improving processes and introducing new concepts and technologies. I’m always looking for an opportunity to improve and expand these skills.I began my career pursing a PhD in astrophysics. And while I was and still am fascinated with the field, I soon found the work not as rewarding as I had expected. But what I enjoyed most about that part of my journey was working with computers: learning the ins and outs of UNIX, writing little scripts to process data, and creating simple web pages (this was the late 90s when the web was still pretty new!). That realization led me to pursue getting a Master’s degree in computer science which I completed in 2006, part-time, while working at Indiana University.At IU I was fortunate enough to work as the Chief Portal Architect for the LEAD project. The LEAD project (Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery) was an ambitious, 5 year, NSF funded project to introduce a paradigm shift in how weather is forecasted. I worked with so many amazing people and learned more about team work, service oriented architectures and web portal frameworks during that time.With my master’s degree in hand, I decided to pursue a role more focused on software development. For 9 years I worked as a systems analyst at Walker Information. This private sector job was very different from my academic lab work and besides gaining a deeper understanding of frontend and backend technologies I also learned more about teamwork and delivering production-quality code on a regular basis and how to communicate effectively with the rest of the company.The work I had done in the LEAD project eventually turned into the open source project, Apache Airavata, and since 2016 I have had the pleasure to join my current team at IU working on Apache Airavata. Because Airavata integrates computational resources across the nation, we have to learn and apply distributed system design principles. That makes the work challenging and rewarding. My primary contribution to this project has been developing a scientific web application platform based on the Django web framework. I’ve had the pleasure of helping dozens of developers implement custom user interfaces and workflows on this platform.
