About Marcus Durand
Experience in senior positions within Clinical Engineering at NHS Trusts has provided me with strong leadership, management, organizational, communication, administration and technical skills. The focus of my PhD research, conducted at Cranfield University, was an evaluation of the application of Hazard Analysis methods to Patient Safety. While working at the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). I helped produce research based interventions, including leading the development of guidance on safer ambulatory syringe drivers. I continue to contribute to practice improvement through my expertise in Clinical Engineering, hazard analysis and patient safety, incorporating these into process design and improvement in healthcare systems.I am an active Christian, doing, not just hearing the Word of God and a student of Christian Apologetics.Specialities: Patient Safety, Hazard Analysis, Human Factors, Research, Evaluation, Risk, Clinical Engineering, Medical Electronics, Leadership, Operations Management, Project Management

Deputy Head Of Clinical Engineering

Visiting Researcher
To conduct a study of hazards and risks related to technology in the care of patients undergoing surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. This involves systematic analysis of the management and use of medical devices in the process of surgical care and the associated risks to patients. Human factors, teamwork, process and organizational factors are being considered along with issues of medical devices management.
Visiting Researcher
My task was to conduct a scoping review of Patient Safety for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Service Delivery and Organisation (SDO) funded project “How Do They Manage”, led by Professor David Buchanan. This included identifying key themes and discussing them in terms of past development and future possibilities for research or improvement. The implementation of patient safety improvement was discussed in some detail as this was found to be particularly prominent. The subject of Improvement itself was also discussed with particular reference to the science of improvement.
Research And Evaluation Lead
The NPSA issues patient safety centred guidance to the NHS and organizations providing services to the NHS. My main tasks have been: - To provide research support to clinical teams - To evaluate the impact and uptake of NPSA guidance through the use of audits, surveys, interviews and other qualitative and quantitative research methods. - Scoping and development of guidance related to medical devices, medications, primary care, ambulances, human factors, design and nutrition with specific attention to insulin and pressure ulcers. The two largest evaluation projects I have recently been involved in are: - Evaluating the effects on service provision following the issue of the Rapid Response Report NPSA/2008/RRR003, which alerted healthcare staff to the risks associated with the insertion of chest drains. An audit incorporating a questionnaire to practitioners conducted in conjunction with the British Thoracic Society resulted in an article in the BMJ. - Evaluating the uptake of guidance on the design and use of wristbands. A safer Practice Notice (Standardising Wristbands Improves Patient Safety) issued on the 3rd July 2007, provided an outline standard for patient identification wristbands. This evaluation aims to examine the adoption of these standards and the effects on the service.
Phd Student
Official graduation June 2010; PhD, Patient SafetyResearch was conducted into the assessment of patient safety hazards in ward based therapies. A data sharing agreement was initiated with the National Patient Safety Agency and a collaboration was formed with consultant anaesthetists and research departments at two NHS Hospitals. The validity of advanced hazard analysis methods such as Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis and Hazard and Operability Analysis were assessed for application to healthcare by using a triangulated research methodology. The results produced a comprehensive hazard analysis of oxygen therapy and indicated that there are clear advantages to the use of these methods in healthcare.
