There have been three major focuses in my professional career, both interpreting, teaching, and managing. As an interpreter, I have worked in various environments such as medical, educational, mental health, business, video relay and video remote interpreting. By working within different environments, I have been able to develop my skill as an interpreter and provide access to Deaf and Deafblind individuals within the community as well as those with other varying abilities. Although community interpreting has been a large part of my experience, educational interpreting has been one of my major focuses. I believe that I have always been drawn to educational interpreting (K-12 and postsecondary) because I am a teacher at heart.Throughout my career it has been an honor to be able to teach and mentor prospective interpreters. Having them work alongside me. Combining the theory they’ve learned in their programs with experiential learning in the field is not only beneficial for them, but reminds me of how much I enjoy sharing the knowledge I’ve gained by being involved in the Deaf community and working alongside Deaf people. Guiding students along their professional path and encouraging them through this decision-making and linguistic web that interpreters work in is a skill that I have developed and that I am excited to share. This is one of the reasons I decided to pursue a master’s degree in interpreting studies so I can further develop my teaching theories and skill.In the past few years, my professional focus evolved to include management, an area that I have enjoyed in my current position. I have realized that my professional and educational history, in addition to my relationship with the Deaf Community, have primed me for leadership. In this role, I am able to apply theory, training, and actual experience to decision making, from business development to customer service. I have come to thoroughly enjoy a position that challenges me while utilizing the skills I have developed in my 20 year career of providing accommodations.
